Sending the CB off the table has nothing to do with the phenolic tip. You are simply trying to power the shot too much. Back off your speed by 1/3 and concentrate on two things...a dead center hit on the CB, and hitting the head ball of the rack perfectly square.

Try hitting at a little less than full power...this will get a great spread and increase CB control.

i just got an andy gilbert j/b and i love it. doesnt hit quite as hard as my friend's sledge hammer, but it controls the cue ball much better and it jumps damn good.

I currently have had a jump/break cue for 2 seasons and I'm currently shopping for a jump cue.
As far as I'm concerned when you buy a jump break cue, you're buying a cue for 2 completely different purposes, and you're giving up performance in both areas to save a few dollars or space in your cue case.

At the moment I have a phenolic tip on my cue. This is great for jumping, not so great for breaking. I don't feel I have the cueball control I'd have with a leather tip.

As soon as I get a jump cue a triangle tip is going on my breakcue, end of story.

I think the same. I think my current set up that i have is pretty much all i want (though i have a stinger on the way). I've said this before but the White Diamond tips really are the s%^t when it comes to breaking. All the power of a phenolic tip but a much nicer hit and a lot more control.

As for jumping i would recommend the Mezz to anyone. A lot nicer jump cue than my old Bungee, very easy to play jump shots with english.

Ok let me see if i can help everyone who cant control their ball on the break with a Pheno Tip. First lets get it to where you are not GRABBING your cue like you have a choke hold on a snake about to bite you. You should be breaking with these type cues and ferrules with a grip on your cue like your holding a EGG in your hand trust me this alone will help you CONTROL the Cueball on the break now lets add soemthing else into that. When you are breaking treat it as a SHOT not jsut something you have to do to start a game , and what i mean by this is to actually STROKE thru your break not just PUNCH it. Im offering this help because I have helped 3 people in the last 2 weeks at my local room who have bought sledgehammers since they saw me with one and thinking the cue would do all the work. It has worked with 2 out of 3 and the 3rd person just cant grasp the idea of holding the cue so lightly. And i cna throw one more thing in when breaking from the side which most people do playing 9-ball make sure your aiming thru the 1-ball to the side of the 9-ball this will cause your ball to JUMP in the air and stick in the center most times it takes some time to get used to a Pheno Tipped cue, but once your used to it you will never go back.

Anyhow just thought i would throw that in and try to helpout.

I use the phenolic tip on my brake cues and I don't have a problem with flying off the table. I know if you hit high on the cue ball it will jump off the table. That's what phenolic wants to do is jump. That's why it is such good material for jump cues. You might want to practice a while with it before you give up on it. To many people try it a couple of times and say, I can't use that. Well I know a lot of very good players including pro's that do use it and don't have a problem. Try it for a while. Butterflycues

OMFG, would you STOP creating threads about jump/break cues. This is the 11th one you've done in LESS THAN A MONTH!!

Do you have a short attention span? Alzheimer's? WTF?? If you really are craving more info/dialog, bump one of your old threads, **** man, bump 5 of them, but stop creating new ones!!!
