one of theplayers here in town ran around with junior for a while
he had a few stories
did anyone here ever play junior or see him play

The last time I saw Junior play was only a couple of years ago, and I think he was about 80. Still played decent snooker and 1-pocket. The stories they tell about him in AL, and especially Dothan, are legendary. Talk to Frankncali, he should have some good ones.

Junior Goff used to go down to Herman & Anns in Dothan - but I trhink that room might abe gone.

He still drove a big white cadillac and would not play on Sunday.

Really a nice old gentleman and he could still play (about 5-6 years ago). Had a lot of stories and was a very good banker.

I hope he is doing OK.

The second best "short" player of his generation (maybe 5'3"), with Boston Shorty being first. But Junior was a smarter gambler and money maker. He came to Johnston City almost every year, and made it out to Vegas and the Stardust as well. He was in the upper echelon of players in the 60's and 70's at 9-Ball and One Pocket. Not more than a ball below the champions. He was more widely known as "Lefty" Goff back then, but his friends called him Junior.

I would rate him about even with Danny Jones or Joey Spaeth from that generation. A very good player, but stayed undercover pretty well. He would rarely be seen playing a top player, preferring instead to play lesser players who he could give weight to (if he had to). That "nice old man" was a very good "pool hustler" once upon a time. :D

?????????

I've seen Jr. play several times when he could play in the late 70's an 80's.
He was a left-handed player an played with a lot of energy. He was one of Steve Cooks main mentors. They both worked the road pretty hard. This month it would be Steve Cook 6 mos. later it would be Jr. A couple of the better left-handed road warriors with Segal being the king...............

I played Junior in about 2004 at a little hole in the wall bar in Defuniak Springs I remember it well because it was one of the few times my father was up visiting me in NW Florida and It took me all day to talk him into going with me. I can't remember the name of the place but it was on Hwy 90 on the east side of town. The bar always had free home cooked food on Saturdays for their little pool tournament. I put Junior on the loosers side first round, and who do you think shows up for the rematch in the finals. I beat junior again for the win and the first thing he said was, Do you want some action? I couldn't beleive he wanted to play, so we matched up. I really hadn't got to see him play much as I wasn't really paying attention during the tournament to how he played. Junior Goff at that time was still getting around fine and still playing good, and still hated to loose. But thats another story. That little place used to have great action almost every week and you would never know who you were going to see there. In fact Scotty Townsend and some of his buddies would show up in there too.

Old pool players never die, they just lose their balls. ;)
