Just a butt

Do any cue makers make butts only and get their shafts from someone else?

I don't know of any. I've made a couple of butts with the intention of using an aftermarket shaft such as TigerX, but have always gone back to the conventional shaft.

I'm not 100% positive, but I seem to remember hearing that in the early 70's Brunswick used to import all of their shafts for 2 piece cues from Japan... If you look at the cues from this period, they have serial numbered shafts. These serials were stamped on the shaft so that they could be matched up to the butt they were made for once they were stateside.

Can anyone confirm or contradict?

I think you will find that Brunswick was also ordering the butts. I believe that Brunswick built their last cue in 1963 and started having others build their cues from that time on.

Dick-

I know Brunswick was known for ordering their cues from others... But were they made in the US, or overseas?

When Brunswick got out of making their own cues, they sold their equipment to Dufferin. Dufferin then made a large number of the Brunswick cues. I don't think that they made all of them.

I think I would enjoy making plain jane butts with linen wraps, making my own stainless joints, ring work, etc. I have no interest in making shafts.

Several of the cue supply places sell shafts that are near complete. I know of one cuemaker who used them for a while before he got a lathe dedicated to turning shafts.

Hal, I use to buy tapered blanks to match to My handles before I started turning My own from dowel. Several people to get them from, I have got them from atlas, and got some from Chris hightower before. The shafts I got from him were decent quality, but played even better. You could always do laminated partials too, If that's your sort of thing.:)

When I retire I'm going to make the "Turner cue". Coco bolo, tulip wood, maple, ebony, etc. with linen wraps and nice ring work. I want to make a very high quality cue rather than a fancy cue.

Are there any cues without a clear coat finish? Just plain wood? Is that feasible?

Hal, just a bit of triva, George Balabushka use to purchase his shafts pre-turned to almost finished size from a company in Vermont, called Randell Wood Products Company Inc.

Do not know if they still exist, but here is there phone number 1-802-485-5361.
