Just tried a titanium ferrule...

Congrats on trying a metal ferrule. After reading your post I couldn't help giving my patent pending Snapshot™ ferrules a plug. Yes they are a little heavier than traditional ferrules, and I expect the comments about deflection and squirt, but they are extremely scratch resistant and will not fade, discolor or crack.
These ferrules are not just cut from a piece of tubing. They are comprised of a special formula of elements and rare metals then each one is individually die cast under extremely high heat, diamond polished, and Laser etched. As a result we have produced a ferrule that is much harder than brass, steel, stainless, and even titanium.
I now have in production the next generation of ferrules called Snapshot™-Pro which will be introduced early next year. The Snapshot™-Pro will be thinner and lighter than the original Snapshot™. However, they will have the same physical characteristics and will be available in the same OD sizes and in .50 inch and 1.00 inch lengths.
