Kamui Black Medium Tips Going Hard

Does anyone else feel like their Kamui medium tip seems to compact/harden up relatively quickly?

I have been using this tip for a few years now and it feels like it is compacting much quicker than it used to.

Any recommendations on a similar tip that will last longer?

Thanks

All tips leather tips harden, you can't beat physics. Maybe you have changed something in your playing style or equipment?
I've installed Kamuis for years and they are pretty consistent. Faulty tips are almost unheard of. I think I've seen two in the last 6-7 years.

They really do harden and glaze over pretty fast.
Definitely you need to go to Black Ultra skin Medium-
Ultra skin last for years,
never delaminate, harden or glaze over and get miscue.
hold chalk really well and cost about $ 5.00 each-
I've tried them all...
Ultra Skin beat them all for me.

I have had the same playing cue for four years now and my playing style is definitely on the gentler side. I am playing 15-20 hours per week fairly consistently.

I am playing in the same environment and keep my cue in an air conditioned room.

Of course it may just be my own bias.

Shooter08 steered me to switching to Kamui Black Clear Soft. I’ve tried Super Soft and of course, Soft.
I choice two cues and installed soft and super soft on the four original shafts (2 cues each with both types).

Ultimately, I preferred the soft and switched all my cues to Kamui Black Clear Soft; I’ve found it works great.
That was over decade ago; I haven’t found any tip playing better but there could be. After all, it’s been 12 yrs.

They all have for me. That’s why I don’t like them. There is a medium soft clear on my extra revo shaft that sounds like a break tip when you hit a ball with it lol

leather fibers vs 25 oz of wood and phenolic (rock)

Not much of a match.

When talking about tips and bad performance the 1st thing that comes to my mind is to make 100% certain that you are sourcing your tips from a Genuine brand specific distributor. Buying from some guy on eBay or Amazon or even right here on AZB, unless they are proven to be Kamui dealers, you are really gambling.

I had Joe Blackburn put a black soft tip on one of my 2 main playing cues at SBX maybe 15 years ago and it is still sitting proudly on my stick and performing admiraby.

Because of a similar bad experience THAT i HAD, Years ago, I spoke with John from Kamui USA and he said that tip counterfeiting is overwhelming.

I would recommend starting there making sure you have the genuine article then. if still unhappy, maybe consider one of the other brands but do the same confirmation with those, as well.

Good luck..

Most often, I play with hard tips. I have a Kamui Clear Black Medium on one shaft. I really like it because it always played like a hard tip.

All this is true but there is also to consider a few factors that will influence the tip performance, durability and consistency:
1. The player - his stroke, how hard does he hit the ball? how much English does he use? Does he break with it as well?
2. How often does the tip in use and hoe many hours before it changes.
3. Weather conditions where the player live and play and how the cue is stored.

For example, I live in a warm country with high humidity in the summer.
When I used to play a lot, like 20 hours a week, tips didn’t last for me that long, they would lose shape fast and get hard and dull quickly.

I moved from medium tips to soft for more grip and spin and that didn’t work for me at all, I jumped to hard tips and got more spin, more power and speed and the tips kept form and performance for a longer period of time.
I’m sure other players will have different experiences.

I got back to the game recently after being away from it for years. I got a CF shaft and everyone talks about using soft tip on them, so I went back to a soft tip and guess what, it doesn’t work for me… jumped back to a hard tip and it’s great.

By the way, back in the day the best tip was Moori, they lost their fame but I had a bunch of them in my tool box and while I was waiting for some new fresh tips to arrive, I’ve installed a medium Moori on a 314-2 shaft and ot actually performs great, it did mushroomed a bit after the first session (most tip do) but is consistent since. And today it’s cheaper than other hip brands

Kamui is not the only one.

Brown, not so much, the black Kamuis however are known for hardening up fairly quickly.
The black Kamui soft is my favorite tip, for about 3-4 months, after that it is noticeably harder and feels more like a medium.

I've noticed they harden quicker than they used to a few years ago. IMO, something changed. Leather? Dye? Glue? They are still one of the best tips on the market but I have a lot of longtime Kamui loyalists that want to change to something different.

Every tip, whether single layer, or multi-layer, hardens over play.

Thank you to those who responded thoughtfully. I think that I am going to try out the Tiger Nitro as it is getting some decent review.

To those who responded with something along the lines of "tips go hard, it's science". Thank you for stating the obvious and unnecessary.
