Tips are super subjective, and people have a habit of believing some weird stuff about them.
Manufacturers make some pretty interesting claims about them as well.
They're both multiple layers of pigskin.
Kamui says the Athlete tips use layers of different hardness, with soft material near the contact area and harder material lower in the tip.

The amount of people that i see in pool halls that don't do basic tip maintenance is amazing. The amount of Mushroomed tips, no layers left, cracked ferrels is amazing. I touch up my tip pretty much every session. I make sure my tip is the perfect shape and it's properly burnished. This is the part that touches the ball and SHOULD be perfect.Agreed
