"Keeping Track of Score" Apparatus Ideas

I'm not sure what the thing is called (hence the odd subject of this thread), but I'm talking about the rod or whatever you see with whiffle golf balls or whatever on it that players use to keep track of the score.

I'd like to build one for my room. The best picture for talking about this is here: http://iacas.org/asm/room/28.jpg

I'd likely put it over the center of the table and in the flat part of the ceiling. Ideally I'd like to support both two- and three-player scoring as me and two friends have already established a weekly three-person "pool night." We mix up games and play rotation, a modified pill game we like, some three-person 14.1, etc.

I'd like it to be classy (i.e. no bailing wire with wiffle golf balls hanging on it), but obviously I'd rather not spend a bajillion dollars, either.

I think something like this might work:

|--000000000--*--000000000--*---000000000--|

Where 0 is a scoring ball, * is a separator, - the rod, and | simply where the ends are. Then again, everyone would have to understand that scoring was done by moving balls "towards the door" (or the window) and stick to that...

So I guess there are a few questions here. First, is there a way to do a three- (or maybe even a four-) person scoring system that is foolproof? Aside from having two two-person rods, that is (which is my fall-back plan).

And second, what materials might I use to do this? We have craft stores, Lowe's/Home Depot, and the normal stores around here in Erie, of course.

Thoughts, ideas, etc. are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I was thinking that a line of pumpkins on a string would look good above that table of yours. You could number them. Just a thought bud!

I can see that shooting on the right side of the table will teach you real quick not to jump up after a shot.

Check Muellers catalog pgs 81 -97.

If you want to keep score for 4 people then get two of the score markers and suspend them from two oak boards you drop from the ceiling. Probably should make a rectangle with the markers inside it which you attach to the ceiling.

how you like those lights?
The lights are great. They work really well.

Not true. But it looks that way in the picture.

Can't do that online very easily. And I was kinda looking to build something myself. I probably don't want "oak boards" on the ceiling.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll cruise around the Mueller's site and see if I can get a few ideas, but please, keep 'em comin' here.

I second this suggestion, especially if you plan on shooting any straight pool. The configuration you show above is grouped in sets of 9. For races to 9 or less this is great but I play straight pool occasionally and that configuration wouldn't work. I don't see any counters on your table, could be on the far end(can't quite tell from the pic).
I think nothing looks better for scoring than a nice set of scoring beads IMO.

The Score Keeper improved

I have always liked the slider score keepers. It is small and very classy looking. However, if you use just one of these for two people, then there is no way to keep track of the inning you are currently playing when playing 14.1. SO, I came up with a way to make a current inning tracker with beads and still keep the classy look.

The top one is how it would look at the start and the bottom one is how it looks when the score is 7 to 4 with 3 left.

I made this with wood beads, brass eye-bolt screws, and brass wire from Michaels (the craft store). Since I came up with this, I have done this for 4 other people so far. At one time I thought of selling the items in a kit, but I just decided to share the ideas so you guys to make it for yourselves. I hope you like it!

Great idea Donovan, that's pretty sharp. I don't know if it will work for Erik with those slanted ceilings but adding those beads really turns that into an all purpose scorer. If I didn't already have my beads setup.........
