Just wanted to let y'all know that late last evening after Keith defeated the Korean champion, Young-Hwa Jeong, he was as happy as a clam, wanting to hang out at the Chesapeake Conference Center with his family of pool friends. We were hanging out with Buddy Hall, Jerry Bento, and Billy Incardone for a spell, and if only I had a tape recorder. The conversations and reminiscing were priceless.
Earl Strickland looks to me as if he is having a great tournament. On the offs, he is practicing, tweaking his break and getting used to the equipment. Tonight at 9:00 p.m., Earl faces Ralf Souquet on the TV table. This will be a feature match. At each one of Earl's matches, the crowd draws near, and Earl is a shining pearl at the U.S. Open this year. During Keith's match, Keith went out front to smoke a cigarette, after the Young-Hwa Jeong requested to take a break. Earl had already shot down his man and was mingling with the fans. It's like old home week here, old friends gathering and enjoying a few laughs, and Earl seems to be having a great time.
Shane from South Dakota was hanging out inside the conference center, sweating a few matches late in the evening. When Keith saw him in the stands, he immediately went up to him and sat down. Keith likes Shane, and Shane likes Keith. They spent about a half hour or more chatting it up. There's no doubt about it that Shane is a topnotch player with a powerful punch. Not only is it his first experience at the U.S. Open, but it was also his first experience of having to play on that TV table with all eyeballs on him. It is a little intimidating, and he stated that he was slightly nervous. There ain't no hard feelings between the two of them. If anything, Keith admires the youngster, and I believe the feeling is mutual.
We're killing a little time relaxing today in our room, gearing up for the 11:00 p.m. round with Sylver from Texas. Many more AzB-ers and CCB'ers have arrived today. This is truly the place to be if you love pool. Francisco Bustamante told me last night that he thinks this tournament -- the format, the equipment and tight pockets, the people, and all of the extracurricular activities -- is a better pool experience for him personally than the WPC and other high-profile events. Everybody is relaxed and having a ball.
