There are many people making cues and so many big cooperation trading who makes what for who. So it's easy to miss the real passion that is put behind a great hitting cue with real hand craftsmanship. 4 years ago (pre AZ) I knew of only the large production/custom cues made here in WI. And there are a lot of them. McDermott, Viking, Jacoby, Schmelke, Pechauer (I think). To name a few, unless that's it...I don't know.
Since I discovered AZ I have also discovered many cues made by many people. Some well know and some that need to be know. And Keith Hanssen is one of those persons. Maybe you are familiar with his work and maybe you are looking for a unbiased opinion. Since my recent quest to go back to a standard 58" cue from my 60" players I have been trolling the wanted/for sale area for months. Well It was love at first sight when I saw one of Keith's cues. It was a Beautiful Birds Eye Maple naturally clear coated w/ Ebony points. And points there were 10 to be exact. It was accented with Elk antler in the collar and ferrule (sorry I am not good on my cue lingo).
So being the desperate dumbass I am I asked if he wanted trade for my beautiful Josey for sale . I wasn't aware at the time that time he was the maker of the cue, so why would he be interested in a trade. Well that cue sold, but it is still in my dreams. But Keith mention he had another up for a raffle. It was also a gorgeous cue 20pt, different color but Birds Eye Maple as well. I though I need to know more about these cues and felt I had nothing to lose. So I bought 3 spots. I had a 1 in 14 chance to win and I did...YIPPIE
He shipped it out right away and I was very excited to get that package. I have all my packages sent to my work So I actually took a half day so I could go try her out.
Flawless great finish, endless points, superb balance and nice solid hit. What more do you need?!
I unfortunately have evolved into the "Lam Shaft" world. Hoping I wouldn't sacrifice the great hit I went and ordered a 314_2 shaft for it. The balance was moved a touch back which is Ok because that's where I rather have it. But the hit was still there.
So in the end I am happy to add Keith Hanssen of Keith Kues to my list of great guys who make great cues...! :happydance:
