Kevin Varney has Passed Away

Years ago my best friend in from childhood died of a drug overdose. Myself and another Irish buddy went to the funeral, it was an open casket. We were both stunned; his Dad & Mom wanted us to see the face of death up close. Afterwards we both went to the local bar were we had all drank for years and I knew my buddy had a tab. Johnny the bartender saw us come in and I went straight to the bar and got us each a shot of Jameson's and we toasted our friend for the last time. I then asked Johnny for my buddies tab so I could pay it for him because I did not want him to be leaving a tab behind. Johnny stuck his hand over the bar and said, "you were the only real friend he ever had." Johnny turned around went into the register and pulled out the tab and then tore it up and said. When you die you have paid your bills! I will never forget it or my friend!

RIP Kevin Varney!

I hope that everyone that reads this knows the moral of your story. Good post. I didn't give Kevin any money,
but if I did, I can assure everyone that I wouldn't be posting it in this thread.

I bet everyone would have been made whole if not for Kevin's health going extremely south. I'm sure he wanted
to make good on his end to everyone, but with the hand he was dealt, it just wasn't possible.

RIP Kevin

yep that is Kevin to a tee...he used to manage Mother's Billiards at one time...I miss that place....it is a light rail pathway now from Pineville to downtown

Kevin would bet $20 per attempt on that jump shot of just a business card width...I have seen him take plenty of peoples money...LOL

Kevin's cue were not always the most gorgeous, but he most definitely knew how to make a cue play it's best...he knew exactly what combinations of what went together the best to get peak performance out of a cue and make it play and feel as good as any cue made....he would even tinker with predator and OB shafts and make them play better than they would coming from the factory

Yeah that's right. There is a lot of truth to that catchy slogan he used.

It went something like this, "Play with a Varney or get beat by one"

Great players for sure.

I had the infamous death wish break cue. Have to say I wish I still had it, was a monster breaker. Sorry to hear about his death.

Kevin was a great guy with a very nice son whom he loved dearly. Kevin was very particular with his work which i always appreciated everything that he did for me. Kevin will be greatly missed. God bless him and his family. R.I.P. my friend.

Wow, what a way to end. It's actually my friend who gave him money for a cue and never got word from him in 2 years. I'm not gonna say anything bad but it's a shame he left in that manner.

i just saw this thread after a friend told me about it. honestly it sucks that he died young but you gotta know by now that him being alive or not your friend would still be in the same boat.

i'm kind of wondering how many deposits/cues are owed in total to az'rs

I pulled out my Varney player yesterday to hit some with it and no BS, that cue hits so nice. Just a flat out players cue.

I just found this thread and am in total shock. Pushout, thank you for all the private pm's between us while Kevin battled his health issues. Kevin always treated me with kindness, and a behind the scene information on the cue I owned. As a cue maker he had no profit from me as I purchased his cue second hand. But he emailed me a wealth of knowledge on the build of the cue including pictures of the process. Something quite unique and showed me a bit of insight on how much passion Kevin had for the cues he built.

I know there a lot of people who didn't get the "proper" customer service and attention in Kevin's final five or six years of cue building. But he sure had a huge influence on me as a custom builder who loved his cues, and wanted people to know how they were conceived. I think he showed me his passion for the cues he built and wanted feedback from the players who used them.

I hope he finally has found peace and relief from the horrible health situation he lived for the last few years of his life.

Rest in peace Kevin

Headmuses.

RIP to Mr. Varney!

I don't want to sound shallow but if anybody on has a way to get to the cues that he still had in his possession. Both of my cues were finished I had him build me a break/jump to match my player while I was in the desert so I sent my player along with my flowers case to him to have the player refinished. It would be awesome to have them. I don't know for certain that the break/jump is completely finished but I do know it was very close as he told me over the phone that the cues should be waiting on me when I returned from Afghanistan. If not I understand and again RIP Mr. Varney!

I am honestly so sad to hear about Kevin passing. I had no idea at all. I will definitely cherish my Varney cue and feel truly blessed to have called him my friend.

May you be hitting them well Kevin up there,
