Kicking: system or seeing it

1 rail...System first...see it second.

2 rail...System first...adjust visually always.

2-4 rail...Obtain a DNA transplant from Efren.

I just go by feel. I have tried to learn some systems, but considered it waste of time. I very often use spin on the cueball aswell, so it will change direction completely after 2nd rail, and for those shots you have to use feel.

The best way to practise is to just use the cueball and fire it off on the table for 20 minutes, with no other balls. Use different speed and spin, and see how it reacts.

I have just practised with the cueball lots of times, and it has definitely helped me with kickshots.

Another good advice is to not grab your jumpcue if there is a ball blocking the way. Very often it is much better to get 1,2 or 3 rails to hit, then hide the balls. I use my jumpcue almost only on the simplest jumpshots, where I am almost guaranteed to make the ball and have position. I feel more comfortable to kick back on safeties, instead of jumping.

I am a 3-Cushion nut who don't play enough to be anywhere near good. Occasionally I get out to Carom Cafe with my buddy ( ;) ) and play a game of race to 100 points which takes 3-5 hours.

Anyway, this is a game I play a lot by myself. Set the CB near one of the corner pocket and an OB randomly near the opposite corner pocket. Start by a regular 3 rail kick with medium speed, 1 tip running english. Once the balls stop, I will try shooting from where the CB is left off. Sometimes the layout will look impossible, you will then try to figure out a new way by adjusting speed, changing english, or bending the CB... Soon enough you will start to be able to feel which side of the OB to hit on. ( see the layout with 6 pages )

To me, the system is a set of templates for people to start on. There are many variables, either in the environment or in our own perception. By practicing with it we will learn more about ourselves ad eventually have our own adapted systems.

Btw, since most likely you will be playing from the "long side". Here is a different practice for you to try which deals with the short side.

I kick pretty good ...I will have to say that the thing that has helped me the most in kicking is playing three cusion billiards. I can see the angles a great deal more. It does truly help...play 3 cusioin for about a month..and you will be amazed at what you can kick at on a 9 foot table...
