I was just looking over the thread questioning why pool doesn't get it's due in the press. I was thinking about how most of the movies just haven't been able to depict the pool culture as it REALLY is. The Hustler (a classic) and The Color of Money (entertaining but not very close to reality). Poolhall Junkies (an absolute farce). The Baltimore Bullet (had all the players but no bite).

Anyway. I was just wondering if anyone had any news on the progress of the film based on Danny Basavich and Bristol Bob? I just have a feeling that using a real life story like that of "Delicious" could finally produce a true to life pool film.

It's on hold.
Budget was $20 million but had to be upped if they used real food.
Just kidding.
Anybody hear from it?

No Dis-Respect to Kid.. I hope they have enough sense to make an release a Mosconi Documentary and Movie before one on Kid..

I mean Willie did not hustle but played alot of money games.
More than Kid .. and he played those games to feed his family.

A Mosconi Movie must be made and released.. I hope this long wait is because of scripts and things. I just hope they did not pay for the rights and artifacts from the Mosconi Estate. To only Auction this stuff off.

Here is another great Idea..... How about a beyond the game (fox sports show) on Jean Balukus.. His is like Joe Jackson stuff..
She was the best and was kicked out to never return,, Maybe even a Jean Movie or an Allison Fisher Movie..

Kid's movie is going to be about the road and gambling. We need more of the stuff that gets away from the money matches.. And shows the dedication to become the greatest.. Mosconi - Balukus and Fisher would be better choices..

We have the Color of Money - The Hustler and Pool Hall Junkies that focus on this stuff already.,.

Better yet how about and Efren Movie. I would have Hustling Money matches
Growing up from poverty Cesar Morrales- And World Champion - an ICON in this country.. And all the outside stuff from pool..

This would be something that appeals to people who know nothing about pool..

There are some thoughts on the subject.

I have to respectfully disagree. I think Danny's story will be outstanding. I think the lure of the road and gambling and the quest to be the best is pools big marketable niche much like all the poker we see on TV these days. I think the Kid Delicious film if done right will be fantastic. You know, the struggles of a young, entertaining, awkward but very talented kid on the road covering all corners of the continental U.S. who then decides he has played everybody their is to play and decides to "fly right" and be the top pro. Sounds good to me.

Mosconi. As a poolplayer and fan of pool history I would love to see his story. I read his autobiography a couple years ago and honestly found it a little boring. Interesting and full of info yet boring. Still would like to see it done.

Same with Reyes although I don't think it would be very marketable in the U.S. It would be a huge hit in The Phillipines though as he is looked at there kinda how we view Michael Jordan or Babe Ruth here.

As with the other movies. Hustler was a classic good movie. The other two just didn't get it right. They made a road players life look too easy. Too much money to fast not enough struggle. The "players" never practiced. They never struggled enough. The worst thing is that as pool players ourselves it was just so obvious that the stars of these movies couldn't play a lick with the exception of Jackie Gleason in "the hustler". Ricky Schroder stance and basic fundamentals in "Poolhall Junkies" reminded me of about a APA skill level 2 or 3 (no offense to any 2 or 3s reading)

I just finished a movie script

I just finished a movie script that I and my daughter have been working on for 5 years. It's a fictional account, but based on the life and hustles of Jack Cooney, Barbara and myself. We threaded in some real-life pool adventures and stories where the real characters were juggled around to blend into the fiction. The pool and hustle representation is finally the real deal. I intend to market it only to those who will not destroy the essence by "Hollywoodizing" it.

Freddy,
Talk to the Wachowski brothers. They did Matrix...they wrote it, produced it and directed it on their own since they wanted to control all aspects of the film.
They are from the south side (Beverly area). I worked with their father some years back...really good folks.

I don't think Jean was ever "KICKED" out as you put it. I thought she showed up for a ladies tournament and was not wearing the proper attire and was fined some money and she refused to pay the fine. ( i believe the fine is still outstanding, and never been paid) So she was banned from playing until the fine was paid. Didn't she then play on the mens tour beating some of the men and the men did not like it so the men made a fuss and she was stopped from playing in mens events. I hope my facts are some what correct as these are the facts that went around back in the day. as an added note Jean claims that the only way she will come out of retirement is if pool goes into the Olympics...If i am wrong, please correct me and set the facts straight for me................................................mike

Dont forget bout PoolHall Prophets that finished production only months ago starrin Freddy Prinze jr. and Vingh Rames. Set in New Orleans!!!

Do you have any direct way to them. They are at Warner Bros. and are pretty insulated.

*****Danny's story/movie WILL NOT just be about hustling. It will be much like the SI article, covering his whole story (personal life, pool, hustling, tournaments, ups and downs). Truth be known, Danny doesn't like to hustle. That's why he hates being on the road and that will most likely be part of the story! I've known Danny for a long time and have spent time on the road with him (yes, hustling) and believe me he hates the hustle. Danny's better suited as a "Gunslinger", Walk into town-tell everyone he's the best there is-and I want to play the best you've got. That's Danny!!! Danny has hustled and has been mis-labeled as a "hustler". He's simply a great pool player that had to do what he had to do to get by. BTW, I find it very hard to believe that Mosconi played more $ matches than Danny. Still scratching my head on that one!

Mosconi... No offense, but I am tired of hearing- "They should make a movie about Mosconi... Earl... Jean Balukas... whoever... Any movie made by a major studio (like Danny's) is good for the game. Danny's story simply has more ups & downs and more real life circumstance that the general public (non-pool players) can relate to. For the good and expansion of the game that's what it's all about, BRINGING NEW PLAYERS TO THE GAME! This will not be a "Poolhal Junkies" piece of crap. When the smoke clears I think this movie will be put in the same category as "The Hustler" and "TCOM". Danny is working directly with the writer doing the screenplay, so the writer isn't fishing in the dark. Mosconi was a prick (heard that from everyone that ever met the man), Danny is the nicest guy I have ever been around. Sidenote... He is outgoing and nice to everyone he meets, he's not putting on a show for the public. What would the general public rather see: A bitter, hateful Mosconi or a truly nice guy with real world problems and aspirations.

Fbreen- Please don't take this post personally... I've just had enough of the Danny bashing... A lot of posters here and elsewhere always want to knock Danny and as one of the best friends that I have, I it get's me bent! Danny does play slow and if people want to voice their opinion on that, fine. If they want to criticize his movie deal or SI article or hustling, fine. BUT IT IS COMPLETELY OUT OF LINE FOR PEOPLE TO CONSTANTLY MAKE CRACKS AND INSULTS ABOUT HIS WEIGHT! He knows that he has a weight problem and there are other things that tie into that. When it comes to his weight, have some couth! When is someone going to start a thread about Danny being good for the game and drawing major interest to it?

Do you have any idea how many screenplays are shopped around every year? With all due respect, I can't imagine in my wildest dreams this movie being made.

Actually, I do. I personally know one of the top ten screenwiters in Hollywood. His last released project has brought in over $200,000,000 this year and is still going. So yeah, I do have an idea. His agent brings him 50+ projects weekly.

Danny's project is on a timeline and is being fast tracked. So I do think that it will be made. Lions Gate recently had Danny do an exhibition/show at one of their corporate junkets in Vegas and had him rubbing elbows with Tom Arnold, other actors and corporate types. They're into Danny and the project. Someone in Hollywood see's something!

I wrote a letter of my own to the editor of Billiards Digest when they were spoofing titles of the upcoming movie, because most of them had nothing to do with him being a pool player, just making fun of his weight. I never did get a response from them. I posted a similar letter here... just to bring it to their readers' attention should anyone have missed the article. :D

He is aware he's overweight. Peoples unique or interesting characteristics have always be part of a persons pool persona. Boston Shortly, Minnesota Fats, Handsome Danny. Even some that people outside the pool world would think were insulting such as One eyed Tony, Gimp, Pizza, (he didn't so much like pizza he had bad skin), Three Fingered Ron, and so on. You may be projection your own insecurities, I doubt he could care less. Like I said he knows he's overweight.
