Kim Jones First Black Woman to Play in World Championship

they needed more players and she came in second in a qualifying event. which i'm assuming meant that she played well enough to win but didn't. so they invited her because she plays well enough to compete. why would you assume it's got anything to do with her race?

Given Charlie's predilections, it probably has something to do with her anatomy. The next headline: "The first woman D-cup ..." I bet she gets a comped room.

What's up with the label?

Why is it that Blacks have to have a label in front of what they are? I think that we should all have labels based on physical characteristics. First cock-eyed player, first hair lipped player, first midget player, first player with a stutter, first player with a lisp, first player with a unibrow, first player with an extremely long neck, first player with the hickups, first player with 3 nipples, first player that sleepwalks, first player with gas, first player with hairy toes, first player with Swine Flu, first player with "man hands", first player with freckles, first player with lower back pain, first player that chews with their mouth open, first player with ear hair, first player with a tramp stamp.

Actually she didn't play well enough to win - and in fact didn't win - but still got a spot that allows her to compete against those who did actually QUALIFY through competition.

I was following the turn of the discussion as it started focusing on Shanelle and how she got to the World Championships.

As I stated I also don't know how this works. Do all the players who come in second place in qualifiers get invited to compete in the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS? Is is fair to ALL the players who played good enough to win "but didn't"?

I guess what bugs me on this is the same thing that bugged me about the 14.1 "World Championships" several years ago where Grady wasn't invited and yet several people that couldn't tie Grady's shoelaces when it coes to 14.1 were granted invites.

I feel that a tournament that is designated as a World Championship and sanctioned by the WPA should be above reproach and should be filled with ONLY the players who have earned the right to be there through either their current rankings on national and international lists proving that they are the best of the best, or when the tournament can't be filled that way then through qualifiers and finally through past accomplishments such as being a multiple world champion at the discipline.

In this way I feel that a World Championship is then filled with players who have EARNED the right to be there and are not just placeholders put there at the whim of the promoter. I guess that the title of World Champion should mean that you beat the absolute BEST players in the world to get the title.

I don't know Shanelle and don't really know what her skill level is. But assuming that she is no threat to people like Kelly and Allison then it kind of sucks for people like Kelly and Allison if they draw super strong players in the early rounds and others benefit from getting soft matches with weaker players. I feel that all the matches should be among players who earned their spots through their accomplishments and competition. Then there are no "soft" matches and no controversy and no hard feelings in any capacity.

I don't think Kim Jones belongs in this World Championship and I don't think Shanelle should have received an invite. I think that there are 48 women who could have filled this field easily who have proven themselves on the field of battle over the years and who deserve the shot at a World Championship title much more than no-name players.

But, it's not my show. Trudeau taught everyone that who has the gold makes the rules.

how do you figure she didn't play well enough to win. i've seen a number of matches where someone played well enough to win but didn't. sometimes the break doesn't work for them or they don't get the rolls the other player did.

those damn blacks! i'm with you buddy.

there aren't a whole lot of black people doing well in tournaments. so what if someone calls attention to race. does it really offend you?

Ok, well I guess then neither of us knows as we weren't there. I understand your point. My point is whether she played great and got crappy rolls or whether she played bad and gave it away or whether Jeanie put a can of whoop ass on her the fact remains that she did not win.

And as the person who came in second she shouldn't be just "given" a spot in the World Championships.

Unless EVERYONE who comes in second in qualifiers is invited as well.

That's my only point.

It offends me. I am white and I grew on the black side of town, I was bussed to school across the city with all the black kids.

The people I grew up with didn't want to be treated differently than anyone else, not worse and not better, they didn't want special recognition for doing something just because they are black.

Me and my friends just wanted to be treated as people and when we did something worthy we didn't want it to be tied to our race.

I have never seen any of my black friends as anything other than simply people.

Making press releases like this perpetuates the race divide rather than closes it.

i get you bro. it just seems to me that a lot of people on this thread seem to think that she doesn't deserve to get to play and the only reason she was invited was her color.

basically everyone's so hyper aware of "reverse racism" that it seems assumed that if a black person does achieves something that it was just handed to them because of their color

there's always the chance that even though she lost she played well enough to impress someone enough to send her an invite. but hay who knows maybe they did just give her the invite because she's black.

so why do you think they invited her?

I don't know and don't care. I just feel that unless she is a proven top player then she should EARN the spot through qualifiers.

That's just my opinion as an observer who used to believe in the fairy tale that being a World Champion meant you had to play the best in the world.

I don't consider a tournament that is half filled with no name players who have never won anything of note to be worthy of the moniker World Championships. But, it's pool and in pool promoters are allowed to call their tournaments what they want to and make up whatever rules they want to - and they do.

I think that we are talking about two different people. From what I understand Kim Jones won a qualifier and Shanelle Loraine was invited.

I think Kim was referring to her invite to play on the WPBA as a result of winning a regional tour.

This is the mentality that keeps us in "the dark ages". People should be noticed for the good they do, not the color of their skin. If someone is a great surgeon it shouldn't matter what color they are. If someone is bad surgeon, it shouldn't matter what color they are. Same with pool players. I'm sure Ms. Jones would rather be known for her skills on the table than the color of her skin. Playing good should encourage people to play. We shouldn't try to encourage one race over another. The sooner people become color blind, the better for everyone. Simply my opinion.

Good post. Well said.

You seem to be the only person that has taken this thread that way & I assume its because you're mistaken about which person is being discussed.

Two people are being discussed here. A black woman and a woman who played in a qualifier, didn't win the qualifier, but was "invited" to play in the "championship*" anyway.

I haven't noticed anyone in this thread being what could be considered "racist" or thinking that Kim was given something due to her race as opposed to earning something. Everyone knows that Kim (the black woman) earned her spot & people have wished her well. The beef people have is with "DP News" making a big deal out of her being the first black woman to play in a "Championship*".

I don't think her being black is newsworthy because we've gotten far enough from segregation & supression that a black man now holds the most powerful position in the most powerful nation. Realistically, we're way past the days of "the first black person to do X". The only reason people still think its relevant is because of others like DP News making a headline out of it.

The woman that isn't black, didn't win a qualifier, and has not even played in a single WPBA match but was given an invite to the "Championships*". She is managed by Dragon Promotions and that in of itself is why she will be playing in the event. We've seen Charlie put who he wants (himself included) into many events where there was a more deserving player. Shanelle recieving an invitation should not be a surprise to anyone.

Any "Championship" done by Dragon Promotions should have an asterik (*) after the word "Championship*". As Mr. Barton has pointed out, its not a true "Championship" that is being played by the very best, its a tournament filled with whoever Charlie Williams wants in it.

Any black person I ever dated never used the race card. I don't see Kim Jones using it either. The post was made by DP.

What IS newsworthy is that she qualified for her spot being a part-time pool player.

If I were to compete in a tournament and was described as the first Irish American to play in the tournament I would bet that the people that were watching or competing would think that it was strange that my race was pointed out. It would be strange only because I'm white but if you are black and it is pointed out then everyone says ooh and ahh. This is what I don't understand or appreciate. If we are all equal then it should never be stated where your ancestors are from. If I were to meet you and you were black I could probably figure it out without being told.

Have you ever hired one of your black dates for a job or god forbid had to fire one of your black dates? I have had employees of pretty much every race and have NEVER had a white employee say that I was letting them go because they were white. My girlfriend works for the San Francisco police department and every time a complaint is lodged against an employee of color the very first thing out of their mouth is it's because I'm black or Mexican or Chinese or whatever and that sucks. Maybe it's because they were just a crap employee.

By the way you talk, I'd label all white people as minority resenting racists. You can't label an entire race because of what a few people do, or what you claim they do.

And I've worked with blacks, Asians, and Hispanics, who haven't pulled the race card. I have, however, heard "I wasn't hired because I'm white" in an attempt to blame affirmative action when that was not the case.
