Kim Jones First Black Woman to Play in World Championship

You have got to be kidding me!

Since this is the first women's world ten ball isn't is fair to make a press release for each person competing?

First British woman to compete for the World Ten Ball title, first blonde, first Texas born woman, etc......

How is it possible that this is a 48 woman field and it's not already full of top women pros ? Where are all the Asian players?

Not to downplay Kim Jones' moment in the sun for making "black history" but this is reaching quite a bit in my opinion. I thought that at least you would not need to play the race card here.

The inauguaral World Ten Ball Championship for women and you can't find 48 players willing to fill it immediately - so it will be filled with no-name qualifers instead?

No wonder pool will never be taken seriously. We can't even manage to do things in ways that aren't corrupted through and through and so inconsistent that it's laughable.

I am sure that Kim would rather be touted for her skill rather than her race.

I agree. Damn, John. We agree. I don't get it. African-American? Was she born in Africa? Moved to America? I don't get the name in itself. I wasn't born in Ireland. Am I English-Irish-American? How about an article about just an AMERICAN. People want to become non-prejudice, then stop BRINGING IT UP! Sorry, this kind of thing is so irritating to me. I guess I just don't understand. We want to become a world with no prejudice, but we have a "Miss Black America." What if I began a "Miss White America"? That would be prejudice? Anyway, referring to her race is just demeaning to her in general.

As God is my witness, I am putting on a dress and competing for "Miss Black America." When they won't let me, I am gonna claim prejudice for being a man, and white. I will win the lawsuit.

Well, this thread has turned ... I don't know...

For the record - I command Dragon Promotion for pulling it off. I mean the Women's World 10 Ball Championship and actually getting it sanctioned by WPA. That is a quite an achievement. However, I thought there is strict guide lines and policy to follow in order to fill these things.

Such as, so many top ranking players from certain counties/ continents receive an automatic invite - by their right and remaining spots are filled by qualifers...

We were left in dark because no press release of such was done. We don't know which American players were invited, accepted or declined and who were alternated that followed... (I could had been in dark and completely missed it - if that's the case, I apologize ahead)

So, who are the world invitees? (I mean by their ranking rights).

Is there a complete list yet?

Thanks.

Sunny come on, transparency in pool? We have a better chance of Kevin Trudeau becoming president and declaring pool the national sport. :-)

The funny thing is I read a article on the WPA website condemning Dragon Promotions and then one a week later praising them for sanctioning with them.

I listen to Ian Anderson today gush about these world ranking tournaments and realize that women can't play in most of them so what's the point of allowing women in any of them???

I also find it strange that the WPA allows a situation to exist that bars the best players from the Philippines from it's sanctioned events.

You want answers as to the process of how WPA sanctioned tournaments are filled? Easy, you pay your money for the sanctioning fee and then do whatever the hell you want to do.

John,

I am very much aware how events are sanctioned by the WPA... because, there are some "promoters" refuse to seek the sanctioning for the sole reason for believing the "Added Money" should go to the players, not some entity for granting their nod..:(

However, for serious professional players, sanctioned World Title is prestige and worth more than the prize money... It's a mark of their achievement and hight light of their career! So for not being able to compete in Open World Championship, I guess to have a World Championship of our own(women) is better than just looking in from out:(

So, I don't care how the sanctioning was achieved or the snafu it took to get it. They can still turn this is legitimate - honorable event for women - if they want to... That is all I'm saying.

What about the OP?

Mark

The OP wasn't racist, it was inadvertently keeping an outdated "tradition" alive.

The generation in the workforce today has only known desegregation but were raised & taught by those that didn't. All of their lives (the bulk of today's workforce) have been taught to make a big deal out of a black person doing something, esp for the first time. Its simply become a way of life. People are going to have to make a conscious effort to change what has become inherent.

Realistically, people aren't going to do that. They'll be guilted by someone telling them that its racist not to do so. Instead we're going to have to wait until there's nothing new left for a black person to do.

I would like to thank those who acted as adults in this thread and carried on a conversation about a touchy subject in a civil manner. There's been a bump or two in the road but overall, most everyone has been adult. Thanks.

Good points. I, too, am pleased about the overall tone in this thread. It's just a shame that so many people in positions of authority can't see that they are keeping racism alive with their knee-jerk pronouncements.

I agree. It just kills me when I hear "African American." I just don't get it. If that isn't rascist, what is?

I just want to congratulate Kimmy for qualifying and I will be rooting for her. I am honored and privileged to have played (and beaten ) Kim in several regional tournaments. She has a fire in her belly to win and is one of the nicest people on the planet and a great ambassador for the sport.

Regardless of her skin color, she is a wonderful representative for the US. With her determination and drive (and now free time) there is nothing she can't achieve in pool. Go Kimmy!

Was there any qualifier held in your neck of the woods? Just curious where and how many were held in US...

To my knowledge, there were only the 2 in Orlando. The others were in Japan. But I am not 100% sure.

Go Kim!

I played with Kim for a couple of years here in the NW on the NWPA tour. She is respectful, personable, compassionate and an all around super individual. I am blessed to have her as my friend.

With that said, she is a pool player with great skill and determination, in addition to being fun to watch.

Does it really matter what race she is? Isn't pool about skill and not skin?

Kim - I will be cheering for you. Stay focused...play well and enjoy the moment!

Do you really want to get into this?

By the way you talk, I'd label all white people as minority resenting racists. You can't label an entire race because of what a few people do, or what you claim they do.

And I've worked with blacks, Asians, and Hispanics, who haven't pulled the race card. I have, however, heard "I wasn't hired because I'm white" in an attempt to blame affirmative action when that was not the case.

The whole reason you even mentioned that the "blacks" you have dated have never used the race card was to imply that blacks don't use the race card. Don't you get it? It seems that you think it is o.k. to label a minority with a positive trait but if you dare to label one with a negative trait then you are automatically a "minority resenting racist". Thanks for that by the way. It tells me a lot about the way you think. Why don't you tell me more about the different races you have dated and their positive traits. Remember positive is o.k. and negative is racist.

Why wasn't there more qualifiers held? It looks like there were more spots to fill..

S.

It is all shady. Why anyone would let this happen and make any kind of arrangement with this group for any tournament, any where is beyond me.

she did mention that the black people she had dated didn't use the race card. meaning she only referenced those people and not the whole race. she's not labeling the entire race so it's really not racist

She no longer lives near me. As a matter of fact, I no longer live in the Seattle area either, so no, I would imagine the qualifier was around Atlanta? Not sure about the qualifiers at all.

Hey T,

Good to see you finally on the board!!! I actually emailed you the original article in the OP so it could be forwarded to everyone in the NWPA. We are proud of Kim and will count her as one of our own forever.

Some blacks use the race card, some blacks don't. Some whites use the race card, some whites don't. It doesn't mean that the entire race shares that negative trait, which is how you were labelling ALL black people.
