was wondering what you posters think of Mr. Kinister and his tapes? are there any really good ones out there? any you would recommend to stay away from?

i did buy one of his advanced tapes on shotmaking and position play and, well, hmmmm? sort of thought it was a joke. it was the same shot over and over and over and over by Neils Fiejen, didnt see much good in it.

anyway, can someone recommend some good ones?

You will find at least one good nugget of info on all of his tapes, unfortunately you sometimes have to sift thru a lot of sand to get to it.

I have a few of his tapes. One I found helpful is #30 "It's a Hanger"

The 60 minute drill for 8-ball and 9-ball is pretty good. Pretty hard to do in 60 minutes, but pretty good.

bert and ernie

Banks for 8-ball and 9-ball is the most informative video about banks I have ever seen. advanced bank shots "twisting a ball" is also a great video. I highly recommend these two.

That's what I've noticed also. One tape I saw had maybe five minutes of real info on it and at least one comment that was just plain wrong.

You are right bob, some of his early tapes were great, but then very soon on, he would take a drill that should be on one tape, and divide it and make you buy 2 or 3 tapes to get it. He began by giving value, then soon screwed his own customers. He got by with it by having so little competition.

His tape on kicking is the worst of the bunch, but like wally said "You will find at least one good nugget of info on all of his tapes, unfortunately you sometimes have to sift thru a lot of sand to get to it".

Sand is a very polite word, the word is 4 letters and it does begin with S.

A couple years ago I saw one of his videos, I think it was called "The Big Break" or something like that. I thought it was the worst instructional video I have ever seen. He had a big moose of a guy breaking racks of 9 ball on a barbox table. Out of maybe 15 racks his student flew the ball off the table at least 4 or 5 times! All the while Bert Kinester would be marvelling at how hard he hit the rack, pretty much avoiding the fact that flying the ball off the table is about the worst thing you can do on the break! I can't believe he didn't edit those out of the video. Also, a couple months later I watched BK play at the BCA North American Bar Table Championship, I think he was in the mens open division and he didn't impress, I thought he overcomplicated alot of shots. This is JMO, ICBW.........Marc

I called up Bert about a month after that tape came out and said, Bert, that is not where it is at, that is not how you do it, you are going to cripple half of the pool world. He went your right and my right arm is in a sling right now. He said half of Chicago is now in traction. He said, that is what the kids want, so that is what I sell them. I went, well ding dong daddy. Edit, he is too cheap to edit, you are right, that tape ranks right up there with my all time turkeys. It stinks worse than my socks. Don't waste a dime on this one. I rate it 5 dirty socks.

Yes, that is a classic, his best work, everyone should own this one, bravo there.
Fast Larry Guninger The Power Source Pool School... 4 stars... :D :D :D :D

Edit!
That's cheating. LOL
I saw this tape. This rocket scientist was teaching his aiming system. He misses a cutshot ( VERY OBVIOUS), they edit it out and show a ball closeup going in.
Bert's 60 Minute Workout is great but he taped the whole thing in his noisy garage with his 80's camcorder and barbox table.
At least the Monk taped his on a huge table and good lighting.
I recommend the Monk's.

I gave it 4 gold stars because the teaching content was outstanding on his very early and first out tapes, on these you got your moneys worth. On the production side I gave it 4 dirty socks, tell me one thing he did right, everything was done wrong. On Berts mouth, 5 dirty socks, after 60 minutes of listening to him babble on in semi nonsense, you want to go hang your self in your garage to put your self out of your misery. That crap keeps rattling around up stairs for days. On his bar box, he put on artemis rubber, 760 simonois and had new rashig balls, so if you wonder why his patterns don't match yours, that is why. That was the only bar box on earth with that on it.
Bare cement walls in his basement, turns out all the lights to hide that and is playing in the dark, the entire thing, gives me nightmares just thinking about it. Oh, Ding Dong Daddy.

Larry, that garage was so noisy, you could hear ding dong daddy wheeze.
Bert has funny lines though like ; " if you keep scratching on this shot, you need to find a job" and " side-pockets are for suckers".
Someone needs to finance Bert so he can really make a nice video.

Somebody has financed me and I am doing high quality DVD's right now. I will solve this problem very soon.

Here was some Great advice, I do love this guy.
"Youse keep shooting in dem side pockets, youse is gonna starve, youse is gonna be a regular diner at da McDonalds dumpster, youse is dooooooomed. Youse dont wanna be dooooooomed.

This guy cracks me up, I can't help it, some how, I love these pool degenerates, I am like a irish hooker with a soft heart.

Bert Kinister in my opinion was supposed to be one of the greatest teachers that ever lived. Then I saw two of his videos. I took them for what they were worth, nothing more, nothing less. I still believe that he may be a great instructor, but maybe video is not his best way of communicating his lessons. Anybody care to comment?

Sure, a private lesson is best, but not everyone has access to a good teacher, so enter the tape lesson. This lesson is also half the price of a private session, so it has its place. Bert also has his place, he has been quite successful in selling his tapes, my hat is off to that.

I have watched a lot of instructional videos and can with all honesty and candor say IMO the Monk's tapes (and philosophy for that matter) are the worse I have seen. He never really says or explains anything, I guess you're supposed to get it all by osmosis. He uses that old cult leader gambit of suggesting that if you just walk blindly into the dark illumination will come.
JMHO, but I really think "The Monk" is a fraud at best.

I bought the whole set of Bert's Tapes. I got stuck on the first tape, 60 Minute Workout for a long time. I could not make the CB do what Bert was doing. I moved on to the other tapes. After picking up tips from the other tapes and practicing I can now make most of these shots in that tape .

I think you need all of the tapes to get the concept. What you are getting is a tape of a private lesson that one of his students was getting. I find it interesting and encouraging to watch someone that is either a hustler, pro or semi pro have a hard time doing some of the drills that Bert presents. It gives me confidence to see that the "pros" need to practice and work on a lot of simple things to get their game to the next level.

These tapes have helped me more than any other but I guess everyone has a different way of learning or needs a different approach of teaching. And I have found that some things that Bert teaches will be contradicted in some of his next tapes. I don't use the back hand english or do I use his big bang break but some of the concepts are useful. As said you need to sift the crap from the sand but there are still some good concepts that may help your game.

If I were to buy one of his later tapes and did not have any of his others I would feel cheated because all you would see is someone doing the same drill for one hour. But what he is trying to impress is that you set a goal and put some pressure on yourself to make a certain drill or shot 6 to 10 times in a row before you quit your practice session.

60 minute workout is great, but watch tape 11 first- this will develop the stoke you need to make these shots. Tape 18 will improve your shot making. Tape 30 , It's a Hanger will help you get position from balls hanging in the pockets. Tape 12 will improve your draw shot only if master tape 11. If you buy these and master them the rest of his tapes will give you the edge to get to the next level. You need to watch each tape once and then diagram each shot in a note book with any info on how to hit the CB. This will help when you practice and useful for reference.
