Kiss angles

We've been having a discussion over at onepocket.org about when there's a kiss in a bank shot. There are some fairly reliable gauges to use in order to calculate when there's a kiss, but it occurred to me that there may be a few contributors here who have actual systems (rather than just experience) to use for 1, 2, 3, or more rail shots.

For example, in the common 3C shot below, using no english, there is NOT a kiss:

However, in this shot there IS a kiss:

CueTable Help

The rule is that if the two balls are lined up directly at the corner, there is no kiss. However if they are lined up slightly left of the corner, the kiss is on.

Does anyone know of any gauges or systems for these types of shots, including 2-rail and 3-rail versions?

Thanks~ Doc

Damn good (I forgot what I was writing) question, Doc. Hope we get some input as I ahve been doing more than my share of bumping my head lately.

At 3-cushion you are far less interested in where the first object ball is going, so you have a lot more latitude to get out of the kiss. The best advice I've seen for 3-C kisses is to decide which ball is going to cross the intersection first. If you can't figure that out, consider a different shot.

Whether there is a kiss under the condition you show above depends on the spin and speed, of course. I wrote an article about simple rolling banks and kisses several years ago -- see the BD article archive.

I'm with Bob on this one. It reminds me of a comment made by Blomdahl on an Accu-stats tape from one of Bob's World Cup tournaments. Sayginer was about to shoot and Blomdahl wondered aloud how he was going to avoid an obvious kiss. After Sayginer made the shot Blomdahl said, "Ah. He fooled the kiss with draw."

Bob, I looked at the BD Archive, but couldn't find the article you referenced. Do you have it on SF Billiards?

Thanks~ Doc

Thanks for asking, Doc. I could not find it either.

Thanks to you too, Bob!
You bet, B-B. Now we'll have to broaden our search for the ultimate 2 and 3-rail kiss potential systems. My guess is that there will be a thin volume on the subject published in 1936, hidden deep in the basement of some Belgian liabrary. But of course, it'll be written in FRENCH!
