Knocking someones action......

Have a general question to throw out there.....
A decently well known name player (lights out kind of playing) came to town with the intention of gambling/making some money. Hes playing a few games, getting a picture of things money wise. A couple of locals announce who he is, implying that no one should play him for the cash.
Now, this is pretty blatant in my book.
How frowned upon is this where you are located?
I wasnt there to be able to give exact details..... but I think it was a BS thing to do on their part.

I feel that if I know the out of town player and his action is a good match up, I won't say anything. But I would not stand by and let him work over a friend of mine without saying somethingabout his speed.---Smitty

i fell the same way.i no alot of road players and when they come to town eveyone calls me and ask how they play.i will only tell them if they can win or what spot i think they need.its hard when i no all the players were i live because i dont want to see them get robbed........bull

It's just a game of information. The out of town player knows that eventually someone will find out his true speed or who he is and ruin his action. So the out of town player takes advantage while he can. If he's discovered, then he can move on to the next town. I'm not going to let some out of town guy take my friends off. If he's cool, then I can set him up with favorable games with players that I don't consider friends. Word around the pool hall seems to travel very fast!!

At one time, years ago this was a taboo practice and people got really hot about it. Today though, it is pretty common and just part of the pool scene. Sneaking in a guy or groups is far tougher than it was in the past.
These days there cell phones, magazines, and the internet, so, the word is out on a guy really quickly. In our area there is not much reason to worry about the locals as they aren't going to do anything with anyone they don't have a full police report on anyway.
In our area, the best we have won't even come to the pool hall if he hears someone can play just a little happens in. It really is funny.

If it's none of your business then just keep your mouth shut... It's not your business.
If your friends / money is involved, it's your business. But I still think too many people toss around the word 'friend' much too loosely.

LMAO! It sounds as if we came from similar pool halls.

Where I worked or played road agents always got played!! I never dumped big money, but I'll try anyone for a while. We always felt it's worse to wimp out and NOT play a road dog, then to step up and shoot at them.

There's something to being in a game you know you are on the short end of, but you just gotta try to last as long as you can......builds character. :D

bet

If a rodie comes in my room and the game is right i let them play, but if they are hustling, i step in until the game is right or they want play!!!

It happens all the time around here, and I don't like to see players action get knocked at all. Honestly though, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference around here. The players who would be scared off by a big name weren't going to play a stranger anyways, and the guys who will step up to an unknown are still going to play if they find out who they are.

It is dependent upon the road player and their attitude when they come through the town. If a good friend was about to be robbed I would probably tell them, especially if I didn't like the road player. My ex and I used to argue about this all the time. He was a road player so he understood both positions, but at the same time he always said you had to have loyalty torwards your home town. In his case it probably came down to whether or not he had a piece of the action or was being thrown a bone, in my case, I just love watching the action.

You forgot to mention the fact that you also have a memory like an elephant....so it's not like they can try and sneak back in a year later and think that you have "forgotten" them...;)

AMEN AMEN AMEN AMEN.

You have one or two friends in your life, but pool players seem to use friend as if it were numbering in the thousands.

If it doesn't have anything to do with you playing then I agree, keep quiet. If someone agrees to play for money then they agree, if they don't then oh well.

Unless its close friends or family.....If you knock someones action, you should get knocked upside the head. Why not just pick a side and make a bet?! JMO.

What would you think if those same guys brought a top pro to play him but had the pro wear a disguise? When this stuff goes on, are they playing pool or some other game?

Wow that's mighty nice of you to "let them play" and again nice of you to step in until "the game is right"

Wow, this is so silly. You guys are talking about the rights of an out of town player? Are you kidding me? You guys DO hang out in poolrooms, right?

Don't tell me there are rules to this. Not when the double-dump is still employed, not when two brothers and a stranger is still typical, not when proposition shots are thrown about. THERE ARE NO RULES TO POOLROOM GAMBLING! Not for a roadplayer. His goal the moment he walks in is to either hit & run or befriend a local and throw him gappers. If he's not tipping out to regulars, he only subjects himself to getting his action knocked.

Now, that doesn't mean regulars have free reign to do as they please. You ruin the wrong guy's action and you might have a serious problem on your hands. There are some guys who wouldn't hesitate to do some horrible things over potential score so sometimes it's best not to get involved.

There is what you should do and shouldn't do but this is based ENTIRELY on what will keep you from getting your nose broken. That's the basic rule.

as a room owner i wont let someone come in and hustle my players and if someone comes in and wants to know about my players i wont lie to them bad for business

It's like trying to stop a robbery in progress where everybody's robbing everybody. How do you know who's the bad guy?

I say arrest 'em all.

Let them play

Why is it anyone would feel obligated to get involved with someone else's action? The golden rule when betting is bet what you can afford to loose. If your doing that it doesn't matter who your playing or what speed they play. If you want to give them advice tell them that. Today most what I see happening is the knocking of action. Hell like afore mentioned in another post most players won't play a guy without a full police report on the guy. What happened to just step up and play? If the game is wrong re-adjust and take another shot at it. The action nowadays is so bad because most people won't play unless they know the have a lock.
