laminate trimmers

Mike or anyone else that is currently using rigid..

Please give us some feedback on how you like the Rigid laminate trimmer compared to the PC trimmer. I have 2 of the porter cables and one is in need of another rebuild. It might be time to try something new, but I would love to hear feedback from someone that has switched.

The PC trimmer mounts so easily. If the Rigid mounted as easily, l would have switched a long time ago.

Not to railroad but how do these stack up to the VFD spindles?

That's an option too, I'm gonna look into it. Costs are obviously lower, having something quieter and better is always attractive too. Thx.

First off thumbs up to Todd (TSP&B) for making a nice small mount to use with his regular mount for the Rigid router, he also is very helpful on the phone and he ships things out very fast.

I have used both routers and I will say the Rigid is a little more compact and a lot more quiet. I like the flat top on the Rigid rather than the rounded top on the Dewalt, the Porter Cable is for the most part the same router with a flat top.

With the mount I got from Todd the Rigid is very sturdy and a nice neat compact design. Only time will tell how well the bearings hold up.

The PC trimmer works very good and after you get the right tools and rebuild one a couple of times you can replace both bearings and brushes in under 15 minutes, on ebay the bearings are plentiful and cheap.

I replaced the bearings on my PC with a premium replacement bearing and the noise was reduced a bunch. With the new bearings the PC is just about the same noise level as the Rigid but I have not used it enough to see if the noise increases as the bearings brake in.

If I was just starting out with picking a router I would probably go with the Rigid because it feels more solid and compact with Todd's mount setup.

15 minutes!!
I guess I need more practice!!
But yes, the replacement bearings are quieter - I'm not convinced that the expense of ceramic bearings is justified - I've tried them.
My 2 cents,
Now, I've got one to rebuild, so back to the practice bench!

I'd like to try a Ridgid to see the difference(s) from a Porter-Cable.
I see both Ridgid model 2400's and 2401's on eBay.
From the point of view of what we use them for, is there any difference?
Finding information on discontinued models is, well, difficult.
Thanks for any info.

I made a tool for getting the spindle not off that really speeds
up the process a bunch, if interested I could post a picture
of the tool if you would like . It was a pain cobbling around
with the wrong tool trying to get that nut off and on.

I would certainly like to see a picture. If you'd prefer, you can send a picture to Gary@GBCues.com - can't attach pictures in PM's.

Thanks!

I also made up a tool for that nut. I take the nut off the old fashioned way the firse time. with a punch and a small hammer. Then I drill the holes in the nut all the way through with a 1/8 drill. I bought a pin spanner wrench at HF used to change grinder disks for $5. I had to grind a little off the inside of the arms to fit around the router shaft. I works great.

Hello Gary,

This thing is pretty crude but it works. I had the two pins out of alignment the first try and had to redo them. The pins are hardened steel and the body is brass with a
steel rod for the leverage handle. With this I can get the nut loose and tight without
any stress to the body of the trimmer.

Oh yeah! I remember you posting that tool a while back.
Very cool idea and much more elegant than my needle nose pliers!
Thanks

I must have gotten a bad Rigid router, after about 15 minutes of use it would start cutting poorly but when it was cold it would cut great. Thought maybe it was a dull cutter so I put a new 6801 cutter on and the same results. Went back to the PC with the old cutter and cut shafts for two hours with no problems.

Returned the Rigid and will stick with the PC.
