Laminated shafts for a break cue

For a break cue

Say that your not blessed with getting the best maple shaft wood, would flat laminated shafts be the best option for a break cue?

I can get some of the best regular Maple for my shafts and Flat laminated Maple shafts are still what I use for Break shafts. So laminated maple is the best choice for break shafts in my opinion.

A friend of mine bought a Jacoby Diamond wood break cue and really likes it.
There is a rumor that the last Diamond wood factory burnt down about 18 months ago.
And if you have never met David Jacoby he seems to be a very nice person.

Purpleheart shafts or Ipe shafts. I make both and to me....laminated doesn't hold a candle to them. Laminated shafts are supposed to be warp resistant...and I disagree. I've bought from good suppliers and most end up with a twist. Purpleheart weighs pretty close to a maple shaft but has greater stiffness. Ipe weighs a deal more, but it is the stiffest wood I've seen and can make a great break shaft combo'ed with the right ferrule and tip.

It's not a rumor...it did burn down. The rumor is that another company bought the rights and is trying to reproduce diamond wood. Time will tell if it meets the expectations. Hopefully it will.

Is over an ounce difference in weight of a shaft really close in weight?

Chris, I just weighed my purpleheart shaft and my girlfriend's and they both come in at 4oz on the dot, my maple break shaft comes in at 3.6oz, my Ipe shaft comes in at 5.3oz. To me a .4 oz difference isn't much compared to the Ipe at 1.7 oz difference from the maple one. I'm sure the density varies greatly depending on the individual pieces, and I just happen to have lighter purpleheart than the norm.....
All of them are just a tad below 13mm. I usually go thinner with purpleheart or Ipe and thicker on maple.... Don't remember why I made these the same.

I have seen PH 13 MM shaft at almost 6 ozs.

I am delivering one tomorrow I just made it is 5.5 oz.

The reported average density for hard maple is 44 pounds per cubic foot. I believe the average for cue worthy hard maple is more like 48, particularly what we deem as good shaft wood. So, I'm gonna use 48. The reported average for purpleheart has a wider range because there are several different species of purpleheart commercially offered all under the same name. The reported range varies from 52 to 61. I find my material is usually around 58. So, 48 to 58 is a 21% increase. So if a maple shaft weighed 3.6 ounces, it would weigh 4.36 ounces if purpleheart using those numbers, a .76 ounce increase. I think that is closer to the average than your .4 or Chris' 1 ounce estimates.

I was really trying to be careful with the words I used because I personally didn't know for a facts.
Thank you for confirming that its not just a rumor.
I hope that the new owners can start production of Diamond wood again in the near future.

My point in saying the Diamond wood factor burnt down was to give people the hint that if they plan on getting a diamond wood cue this might be the best time to buy fefore all the diamond wood runs out ...................

I have rarely seen anything near a 13mm purple heart shaft weigh much under 5 ounces.
