Whilst I'm certainly not advocating selling it on the open market, I do agree destroying it is a waste. I'd like to see it be put to good use, such as inserting it into the rectum of those that profit from it.

That's what happens to cars. Cars get seized by authorities and then auctioned later.

If the governments turn around and sell the ivory cheaper then what the poachers would, buyers would more then likely pursue the legal routes of buying it via the governments.

When a shit ton of ivory is recovered from illegal poaching, it can then be legalized, sold way cheaper and the price of it would come down some overall, especially since there isnt much of the legal stuff out there now. If new legal ivory were introduced to the import export market, it's value would go down significantly as well as the poaching. Once the poaching drops to do less demand from the buyers getting it from the poachers then the less elephants will be killed.

Until it all starts all over again, but at least this way it buys some time and helps out countries that could put the money to good use.

I don't really understand the demand for ivory. Synthetic and other natural materials looks just as good and are more durable.
There is no scientific proof for ivory use in the medicinal sense. Greed and ignorance rule the day.

The only way destroying ivory = a waste, is if you value ivory and think it's something people should own.
You can't look at it like that. You should consider it garbage.
It's the unfortunate byproduct of something shitty and harmful. You shouldn't ever feel bad to see it go.

If you want to see illegal ivory go away, should treat it with utter contempt.
Especially when discussing it publicly.
You can't talk about it wistfully and try to think of ways to use it, that's being part of the problem.

There is no world in which ivory is in demand by consumers, yet poaching grinds to a halt.
If you truly want to kill off illegal poaching, then the most effective path to that goal is to kill the demand for it.
To kill the demand for it, resist the urge to talk it up like
"geez, this stuff's so nice, and now it's going to waste".
