I see the USBA issue a confirmation last week the event was going forth. First I had seen any update on it. That is going to be busy at the Rio with the WP World 10 Ball going on too (y)

  • Predator chooses Pedro Piedrabuena and Hugo Patiño as its wildcard entries
  • USBA and Predator Announce World Cup Qualifying Tournament
Predator, which is the organizer of the 2022 Las Vegas World Cup to be held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino from March 27 to April 2, 2022, has selected Pedro Piedrabuena and Hugo Patiño as its wildcard entries into the 1/16 main tournament round at the World Cup. Piedrabuena won his 10th national championship crown last month, and Patiño is a four-time title holder. Both players have extensive international experience.

In conjunction with Predator’s selection, the USBA and Predator have announced a tournament on March 25 and 26, 2022 for USBA members to qualify for the 2022 Las Vegas World Cup. Ten spots will be decided in the qualifying tournament, which will be held at same venue as the World Cup. The qualifying tournament is open to USBA members who are eligible to represent the United States in international competitions.

The Las Vegas World Cup is one of eight similar tournaments on the UMB calendar for 2022. Each tournament is limited to 149 players. Seventeen players are selected for the 1/16 main tournament round pursuant to the UMB rules. This round of 32 players includes the top fourteen ranked players in the world, the two organizer’s wildcard selections, and one UMB wildcard. The remaining 15 spots are determined by a series of four preliminary rounds, the PPPQ, the PPQ the PQ, and the Q.

As part of the UMB rules, the USBA, as the host federation, has the right to designate twenty players for the PPPQ round. In addition to the ten spots to be determined by the qualifying tournament, those players who placed second through eighth at the 2021 USBA national championship have been invited to participate in the World Cup. They are, in order of placement, Tae Kyu Lee, Young Kyu Lee, Edward Gomez, John Park, Miguel Torres, Kang Lee, and Eric Kwon. The remaining three spots will be selected by the USBA.

I'm thinking there might be some surprise selections, if you follow the scuttle butt.
Is it expected for the top Euros to attend? Guys like Jaspers, Blomhdahl, Caudron, Sayinger, Horn, Zanetti, etc?

Thanks.

This is a UMB event. The UMB, which is the official world organizer of billiards, is in a dispute with a Korean organizer who is running his independent events. Caudron decided to go with the Korean tour. The UMB has banned him from UMB events. The other players that you mention are probably all going to be in Las Vegas, Covid willing.

The top 12 or so players on the UMB ranking list are automatically seeded into the final 32 of the World Cups. They also get travel and hotel expenses taken care of. If they fall out of the top 12 by not showing up or playing badly, they don't get those incentives. I expect all of them to be there. On the current UMB ranking list, the current top 16 are:

1 JASPERS Dick NL
2 ZANETTI Marco IT
3 SANCHEZ Daniel ES
4 KIM Haeng Jik KR
5 MERCKX Eddy BE
6 TRAN Quyet Chien VN
7 TASDEMIR Tayfun TR
8 HORN Martin DE
9 COKLU Murat Naci TR
11 SIDHOM Sameh EG
12 HEO Jung Han KR
13 SAYGINER Semih TR
14 BLOMDAHL Torbjorn SE
15 CHOI Sung Won KR
16 NGUYEN Duc Anh Chien VN

I expect nearly all of those to show up.

Great, didn't know if that Korean dispute was still ongoing or not. Too bad no Caudron but that will still be a hell of a field.

Kudos to Predator for making these events happen. This screen shot is from CSI's schedule of events. It was created and posted last year, before USBA and WBPA tournaments were announced. Listing all the events that I know, to help visualize and foresee any scheduling conflicts.

Las Vegas Open, Wednesday March 23rd-26th
USBA World Cup, Friday March 25th-26th
Predator World 10-ball, Monday March 28th-April 1st
WPBA Predator event, Thursday, March 31st-April 3rd

I think that USBA event is a qualifier for the UMB World Cup which is just after.

Curious why do you think it can easily go bad?
Too me I wouldn't mind buying a reserved seat or session or something like it. I don't need it to be free and dealing with a hoard roaming around. Depends on what you are looking for. I'm strongly thinking of flying out there for a week to spectate. I wouldn't be playing out there and drifting around constantly in-between matches and just peaking in. Is it just going to be uncomfortable bleachers? What is the set up? I'm not going to stand and watch. That said, I would probably be spending most of my time watching the World 10 Ball although their scheduling is so ridiculous that there will be plenty of time to watch 3C, so maybe I would be bouncing around LOL. Haven't seen any pro 3C in person since the days of the Carom Tour at Chris's Billiards. The info on these events is just poor. Now you got the WPBA event too. They aren't even two months out and there is next to no info. SOP for Pro pool. I guess they are just set up as a side show for the amateur CSI BCA stuff going on. I think during the last 10 Ball event in AZ a month back they announced that the World 10 Ball was Finally going to be expanded from 64 players so maybe there will be a lot more matches than that one a day crap they've had the last few years. The World 10 Ball should be the preeminent event in pool and ought to be featured as such. It sure isn't that Matchroom 9 ball crap, or I mean Matchroom "Pool" crap.

I think it is incredible to see Predator step up and sponsor all of these events.

For those who want to attend and didn't notice, the World Cup ends on April 2nd which is a Saturday. normally that will be only the semis and finals. The rounds of 16 and 8 will probably be on Friday. I think the entire round of 32, including the first appearance of the top seeds, will happen on Thursday, March 31st, as close as I can figure.
