When, where, and who was the last American to win a major tournament outside of the US? Johnnyt

Anyhow, my whole point of the question is to show that outside of the six or less players that get a free ride from their sponsors here in the US it just doesn't pay to go outside the country. Hell, it don't pay to go more than five states from your home base w/o a sponsor in the US. By the way, Earl had Cuetec for his free ride in 2002 and I'd bet Nick was full sponsored too in 99. That could certainly be a reason. Sponsorship is hard to get these days.

Even in the US, less and less local champions are produced in last recent years. I'm not sure the statistics, I recall this year Masters 10-Ball Championship and last year US Open were won by players from foreign countries.

Edit: Morris and Van Boening won the World Cup of Pool in 2008.

sponsorship and cost is definitely 1 reason..

Another reason is most of the European and asian countries have an academy and this keeps breeding champions.. with Mark Griffin helping towards the junior set up as well, by having top coaches train these youngsters, then in the future hopefully that will change.

Until then i think that it may last a while longer im afraid to say....

And I agree with you wholeheartedly.

The World Cup is definitely a major! The main reason no American has won overseas is fairly simple. They just aren't good enough. Our best players have been playing in the majors all these years (Shane, Johnny, Rodney, Corey, Earl etc.) and they haven't been winning. There's a good reason for that. The other guys play a little better.

Any other reasons offered for this are just an excuse imo. Players from other countries have issues of their own to deal with, i.e. Visa problems, sponsorship, etc. It's no piece of cake being a pool pro, I don't care where you're from. Even Wu and Yang have had to find other sources of income. And they aren't the only ones by a long shot.
