Hi all, hope this finds you well.

I have decided to take a random trip out to the states for 2 weeks starting this Thursday / Friday.. it is a little random and was not expecting to come out. planning on flying into SF/LA and go from there. if there are any Az'ers in CA who could help me out with any of the following that would be great;

things to see/do
accommodation
good pool halls/ cheap entry tournaments
best way of getting around?

I am really up for trying anything, so any suggestions welcome. I don't have the most expansive budget, but enough to get around, was possibly looking at car hiring for a couple of days at either end and possibly going from SF through death valley possibly a LV stop off then the coastal route back from LA... although really is open atm.

Thanks in advance :)

Dudley...The first thing to do would be to look at a map! LOL Death Valley is east of L.A., so you'd go from SF to Vegas (not much of scenic drive)...then to Death Valley and L.A. via I-15. The coastal drive up Pacific Coast Highway, from L.A. to SF, is beautiful...in fact it's spectacular all the way north to the Oregon border. Have a great trip. There are lots of AzBrs in those parts of the country!

Well pool wise, I can suggest a few places.

There is California billiards in Mt. View. Here's is the link to the tourney page http://www.californiabilliardclub.com/Tournaments.html. Nice place.

There is Edges in Milpitas where I play. This is a real Mom and Pop place. Nice tables. They have a fairly good 8 ball tourney on Tues nights and 9 ball on Wed.
This weekend they are having a 3 cushion tourney.

The drive down 1 is unreal. Just don't be in a hurry.

Another nice drive is down 101. The drive down 5 just sucks.

Now, you could kinda do a loop. Like going east through Yosemite on 120 to 395 and then south toward LA. It is no way direct, but the drive through Yosemite is a must. I highly recommend doing it. It is the right time of year, fall. The leaves are turning color now, it is beautiful.

Lone Pine on 395 is where there was alot of westerns were made. It is also where Mt Whitney is located. This is the highest summit on the contiguous US.

Look me up at edgies if ya want.

my Geography aside... thank you :)

Scott, thank you for the advice. I should have explained better, would be flying into San Francisco, then driving east to vegas, then west to Los Angeles and back up and round to SF.

However doing all the budget counting I might just keep this trip within CA due to funds (I know what would happen if I went to Vegas :s) in which case I would take one coastal and one scenic route I think.. so 395 and 101 (thank you duckie). I'm toying with the idea of spending 4 days (long weekend) in SF, then allocating 5 days to get to LA, 4 Days in LA and then another 5 days to get back to SF.

I can drive, and I imagine the drive to be beautiful, I wouldn't mind taking it in over the course of a few days and exploring town along the way. I'm just excited to explore a country that we hear so much about, but that I know very little of. I am probably rambling, but I want to see what the country and everyone is like for myself with no pre-conceived ideas.

3 days.. exciting times :)

17 mile drive

Take it - its amazing. I grew up in CA - I want to take the Convertible I have now up the coast. Envy you!

an alternative option... :P

I could always take the convertible for you if you would like? think of it as it living its dream :)

that's a point, if anyone has a car they are not using for a few days? I would gladly pay someone rather than faceless hire company... I imagine probably not haha.

If I had the time that you have and I was visiting (instead of living here) I would probably do something along these lines...

4 days in SF - Big City, you won't even see it all in 4 days. See a game at SBC Park and enjoy the scenery.

2 days to get to LA - Not a lot to do along the central coast of California. It's more about the journey than any particular destination. It's just a nice long beautiful drive. Maybe spend the night in Monterey or Paso Robles on the way down the 1.

4 days in LA. Check out the scenery, make a trip to Hard Times on the weekend for some decent pool action.

Weekend in VEGAS! - The drive to Vegas is only 5 hours from LA. Drive out, have some fun, play some pool, gamble, and have a merry old time.

Back to SF - 5 hour drive from LA to SF straight up the 5.

That would be the ideal two week vacation to the west coast for me. Now if someone could give me the same kind of great itenerary for Boston, MA I'd be on my way. I want to do the opposite and check out the east coast.

Oh, I almost forgot...best trip I've ever done...you can go to eaglerider.com and make a reservation to rent a motorcycle and ride it down the 1 to LA. Return it in SF and you will have had a once in a lifetime experience.

Also, while you are in Las Vegas and have a free afternoon and a car take the east route out toward Lake Mead. The scenery is breathtaking, absolutely stunning. I have done it many times when visiting friends who live on Lake Mead and it never fails to impress me. Happy traveling! Wish I was going out this fall.

Right....

In a few short hours I should have a flight booked for flying into San Francisco sometime on Friday :)... hurry up midnight (payday)

plan is slowly coming together. I am helping with a beach clean-up in Berkeley on Saturday morning.. will be nice to contribute something to the places I am visiting, and taking a trip to Angel Island, before headed back to somewhere along the bay in SF, there is a big bonfire arranged....

so far.. that's day 1-2 covered, well minus getting to and from those places although having checked out craigslist, there seem to be lists to and from anywhere.. am sure the public transport will run in the way Id like, my main concern is having my things somewhere safe, that is the benefit of a hotel. I may book for first night somewhere in Berkeley or Oakland.. early start Saturday :)

apologies for the ramble, getting excited :)
