Lathe question

I don't like to look at this, but its a very powerful reminder of how dangerous a lathe can be, If you are squeamish at all don't look!!! Lathes are a lot of fun but VERY dangerous, give them utmost respect, remember ALL the safety tips, no rings loose clothes that can be caught in the chuck or any other rotating part of a lathe or any machine for that matter.. keep all routers etc, unplugged until ready for immediate use.. this a very graphic link, the guy got his jacket caught on the chuck....

Tool and die makers have been using unguarded equipment from the 1st time the start their apprenticeship.
Safety and awareness of the immediate dangers are the 1st things shown to the apprentice.
Machine tools are very dangerous. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just kidding themselves.
For some operations, it can not be made fool proof.
A moments loss of concentration , can be life altering in so many ways.
All too often, I see or hear about situations that could have been avoided if the operator was not too tired, or was not distracted, or had thought about a safer way of achieving a similar result.
Probably the 1st thing people should do when they want to get into a machine tool intensive hobby, is to do a basic course in machine tool use and safety.
Even if it seems old hat, you may still learn something that could save your eyesight, a limb, or even your life.
 
dead pics

if this was your father, brother, friend, coworker. how would you feel about reliving there death by seeing there pics on here. posting pics of a dead person online. i wonder which loved one is crying right now.
why would anyone post a picture like this. people dont ever forget stuff like this.

I may be a minority here but I disagree. I seen these pictures a few years ago but never book marked them and haven't been able to locate them since. Much of the equipment we use in cue making can be very dangerous when used properly let alone when the operator is either careless or clueless. If these type of graphic pictures save one accident then they are well worth the effort. You ask "why would anyone post a picture like this. people dont ever forget stuff like this." That is the very reason for these type of pictures.

I agree with Dick. If it saves someone else from having a tragedy, then the life lost was not lost in vain.

If I die in a way that saves another life, in any way, what better way to go?

this is more than just safety training these pictures can be used to hurt ppl too.
if you have children would you want some kid that thinks this is funny and takes great pleasure in showing these pics to you child in school it would destroy your child it would hurt them all there life.
tie a cow to the lathe on turn it on. that will show the same thing
but some one loved the person in these pics.
we need to be kind to them even if we dont know them.
sorry everyone i think there are other ways of safety training without taking the risk hurting the surviving family in anyway .
in the right hands these pics make there point ...............as safety around any rotating object
and in the wrong hands it could put someone to there knees in tears.
i dont want anyone hurt in a lathe, or someone useing pics like this to be mean.

i will stop here this is just my opinion i understand that this was posted to make ppl think about safety.
it made me think about this man's family

Lathe accident pictures

Yes I thought they might be controversal, but we had a rank beginner (on lathes) talking about getting one. I know I have worked around lathes since 1962 off and on, (mostly off) and I never had the point of HOW dangerous they were driven home like that set of pictures did a couple of years ago.. so they have been on the web a while. I developed a healthy new respect for lathes because of those pics, and if I could impress just one lathe operator (new or veteran) enough to remember how dangerous a lathe could be then it might save more lives, which would be worth it in my opinion.. I really think the trade schools should make them available for viewing after a warning of how graphic they are. And I did warn everyone of how graphic they were.. Bad things do happen to people, so maybe it will prevent another family from suffering the same thing..
Of course I realize there are different opinions!!
