ld problem ? new cue syndrome ? or just a fluke ?

I tried an experiment tonight with one of my team mates .....with an ulterior motive lol.

This team mate is an s/l 3 that has been with me forever. Actually she is the one that got me into playing apa. She has never been a good 3....just decent . Well she has regressed quite a bit over the last couple of years to the point I would not bet a dollar she could run 2 balls starting with bih. Just puzzled me how she constantly missed easy shots usually undercutting her shots.

During the last year she developed a back problem and a knee problem and also started wearing glasses. When I met her she was shooting with a cheap graphite cue and was always complaining about it being sticky. About 4 years ago I gave her a predator with a 314 shaft that I had taken on a trade. She shot ok with it.

The more I watched her regress and the more I worked with her the more I suspected it was the cue.

Now I dont have a main player. I prefer to change out every so often . Well tonight I took my adams/ helmstter gb3 that I bought about 6 months ago out of the closet to take to league. I played my 8 ball match with it and shot great and won. When it came time for her to play I suggested she shoot with it. She ran 6 balls with it the first rack and went on to win her match 2-1.

She then shot 9 ball with it and shot great and won that match also. One of our team mates who also plays on 2 other teams with her and I said he had never seen her shoot that good. I told him I thought it was the cue.

So like the title says...i don't know if her grew improvement tonight was the ld shaft....new cue syndrome....or just a fluke. Time will tell I guess .

Now to my ulterior motive.

So I decided to play my 9 ball match with the predator and shot great and won that match also.

So when we start packing up I asked her how she liked the cue. She said she really liked it and I asked if she wanted to trade. My ulterior motive lol. She said sure and I told her if she changed her mind at any time we could swap back.

I have been wanting to get a revo but being frugal by nature and a cheapskate by necessity....you know the country song...too much month at the end if the money lol. Well I thought about getting a revo shaft fir this predator because its a blak 4 and I thought it would look cool with the revo shaf. No hurry trying to get a revo...just when ever a good deal pops up after this buying frenzy settles down. Even if i could afford one i don't see the need to spend that kind if money on something that will take its turn sitting in the closet like the rest of my cues do.

I was never a huge ld guy. However I did try Meucci's pro and UW shaft and liked both where I even decided I liked it enough to order a new BMC cue with 1 of each shaft. As I waited for the cue to get made I ended up ordering a Revo before the craze and I'm using the Revo 💯 of the time since. I only mess around with the Meucci or my custom cues if it's a night out or we go to my buddies house to play on his new table.

Since purchasing my 1st Revo I've bought and sold about 10 different combos of Revo shafts and butts to come up with a combo of asthetics and feel I like best. Finally just tonight about 10 minutes ago hopefully finalized my setup for competition (what I'll bring every time I go to tourney or league night.) I say 10 minutes ago because a new butt was released today and I just ordered it to use with my rush shaft for breaking instead of the rush butt. Yes I'm crazy won't ever deny that.

Just a small reminder if you even know at all but if you don't want to spend the 500 at once, seyberts does offer a finance service on there products that you could pay off in 3, 6 or 12 months. I've used this service 6x's now and have paid them all off before time without any penalty. Of course you would have to wait for the Revo shaft to be back in stock.

As far as your teammate, I think it had some to do with new cue snydrom. My league operator has shot with a $25 cue for the past 7 years but after dealing with me and a few others cue obsession madness she bought some wood at the expo 2 years ago and had Pat Diveney make her a custom out of it. Since she picked it up at the expo a few months ago, she has been shooting so much better. She is also a s/l 3 but we shoot UPA, not APA and our rating go 1-10 in 8 ball.

Time will tell for sure with your teammate but not running 2 balls in a row compared to what she did this past week is a profound difference. Hopefully she will keep it up as it has to give her great joy.

Thanks for the tip about seyberts. I have not always been in the financial shape I am in now but after losing every thing when the housing boom went bust I changed my spending habits and try to live within my means.

Yea she was pleased as punch with how she shot so much better than she had been . When I say she was shooting terrible I mean to the tune of getting beat 18-2 by 2's . I was really getting exasperated with her and really tried ti work with her before league and after trying to figure out what was going on. She is locked in as a 3 and will never go down even though she has a losing record .

She used to shoot almost as good as she did tonight and that's why I was so puzzled at her steady decline over the last couple of years. I think the red of the team dislikes the fact that I keep her on the team and makes sure she gets her share of matches. None of them have known her for more than a year and I guess they all assume she has always played lime what they see from her.

She is a dedicated team player...always shows up...helps keep score ...more than any one else does. And will tell me to olay some one else when it really matters for a win in playoffs or higher simply because she wants the team to win.

Actually she is my ex girlfriend but we get along great and she will always be a part of any team I am captain of as long as she wants to.

She is probably on epo and testosterone. Maybe even salbutamol. And steroids.

Damn performance enhancing drugs. They are everywhere.

Since a weak 3 is unlikely to be using much side spin, it might be that the balance is better for her on the GB. Or it might be the new cue syndrome, which in turn could be from simply paying more attention to the here-and-now or the feel of each shot.

There is that psychological factor of playing better with a cue that you like for sure and like Bob said about paying more attention with a different cue.

All my cues shoot straighter than I do.

I just appreciated hearing someone else talk about how their cues sit in the closet and trading out from time to time.

Some people think you will play better or at least more consistent with the same cue all the time.

That may work for some but I find myself getting ...stale for lack of a better word at the moment. I find myself...as bob said paying more attention when playing with a different cue from time to time and that ups my game that night....usually lol.

It's true about consistency and I think that it has more to do with the shaft, ferrule, and tip although balance point does play a factor in the butt.

I just wish I could commit to a particular make/pin type but I kind of like them all.

I know what you mean about getting stale though. Long as we can afford the options, I say why not use them!

All f my cues are different and I pls about the same with them.

McDermott with g core shaft...linen wrap and whatever tip the factory provides.

Meucci with black dot shaft . Clear over wrap with a kamui clear soft tip.

2 players cues I have had forever with the original tips. One has a built in extension that extends out from the butt

An unknown merry widow that I picked up from a pawn shop with no wrap

The aforementioned Adams / helmstetter with the factory tip and linen wrap.

Today I am playing in a tournament with the predator ...314 shaft...leather wrap and a moori medium tip. Playing pretty good with it so far. Undefeated so far.
