So I'm curious, do most cues conform to standard joint sizes? I see a lot of people mention that they play with a custom cue with a OB1, Predator, or other type of non-stock shaft on there. Do most of you get the blanks and have your cue make do them up to match? Do they just fit the joint diameter perfectly? Or, do you just live with a slight mis-match in the joint area?

The reason I ask is I was at the local billiards shop and they had some OB1 demo shafts. I put one onto my new Oleny and it fit close but was slightly larger in diameter then the stock one and certainly wasn't a perfect flush fit. No biggie, I plan on using the stock shaft anyway (though they did say I could take the OB1 out for a day so I'm going to do that just to see what all the fuss is about...I love being able to demo things like that....though if it really does play great I'm sure I'll have to buy one eventually).

Just made me curious about the whole fit issue in regards to these shafts and whether people just live with small differences in fit sometimes.
 
My OB-1 is very slightly different at the joint. At first it bothered me but now I don't even notice it anymore.
 
My predator was slightly larger than my butt which is great and a very easy fix for anyone with a lathe. Smaller would be a problem and easy to fix just more expensive.--Leonard
 
Cool, thanks for that info. The OB1 I tried was definitely a little larger which sounds like the better of the two alternatives. It was close enough that I could live with it probably too. I'll give it a try this weekend and see how it shoots.
 
just remember what ob-1 recommends its how i got used to mine.

take and throw balls out on the table for 10-15 mins and that whole time just shot them straight no english at all.

then slightly move left or right on the cue ball and u will get used to it quicker.
 
The OB shafts and the Predator shafts come as "off-the-shelf" or they can be custom fit to your specific cue. Let me know if it is something you are interested in having made because I can do both, along with McDermott "I" shafts, Tiger Ultra, and Meucci Black Dots.

You are correct in that we build the OB-1 and OB-2 cue shafts to specific diameters based on the joint configuration that it is intended for. In most cases, this provides a very good fit, but in some cases there is a difference in size.

Take a look at our website here http://www.obcues.com/shafts.html to see what we build. There are basically 17 different models to choose from in either the OB-1, or the OB-2 cue shafts. We also list the diameter we build each of those shafts to so that you can measure your cue to determine how it will fit. We also have a fitment guide that gives the type of joint screw in many different cues, but remember, many cue makers use multiple joint screws so you have to make sure what you have.

Of course, for a perfect fit and match of the joint ring work, Ryan (Ratcues) with Muellers keeps our partial shafts in stock and does tremendous work. Most all of our other dealers do exceptional work as well, so don't forget about them too.
