I'm looking to get an understanding of the range of practices as far as league operation and costs to players. Please respond about any league you're confident you know the answers about. Leave blank if you don't know a particular answer.

Questions
(1) What is the name of the league, the city/state, and is it affiliated with any national or regional organization
(2) Is the league in-house or does it have multiple locations?
(3) Is the league played on Diamond 7' or Valley 7' or 9' or 8' tables (or other)?
(4) Are the tables coin-operated? If so, how much per game?
(5) Aside from coins in the table, what is the total amount a player pays each week?
(6) For non-coin-operated tables describe how long the table is available to the team
(7) How many players are on a team?
(8) How many games does each player play each night (if match play, describe a match) ?
(9) How many tables are used for a typical team matchup?
(10) How many teams are in the league you're describing?
(11) How much, if any, of the nightly fee goes to end-of-session cash payout?
(12) What other benefits, if any, do you get as a player? (shirt, free drink, trophy, banquet, etc).
(13) Please add any comments or information you think I should have asked and didn't.

It would be easiest if you respond like below:

(1) Ralph's pool league, Toledo, OH
(2) in house
(3) Valley 7'
(4)
...etc.

Thanks in advance

(1) VNEA league, New England
(2) Multiple locations
(3) Various equipment, mix of barboxes and fullsized tables
(4) When playing on barboxes, the table is opened so that all games are free.
(5) $8 per player, $20 one-time sanction fee.
(6) Table is available at least 30 mins before match.
(7) 4 man teams, and you can have alternates
(8) Each player plays 4 games (round robin style)
(9) 1 table is used.
(10) In this overall region, I think 17 teams. 8 teams in our division.
(11) Not sure. Most but not all.
(12) Patches for accomplishments like runouts. Trophies.
(13) Playing in your division gives you the right to enter various big tournaments. There's a regional championship in Canada and a state championship too. If I understand it correctly... each 8-team division can field one team to a major international tournament in las vegas. I think some expenses are paid but I don't know the circumstances.

Des Moines has 9 leagues that I know of.

I've played on 6 of those. I play mostly on VNEA.

1.) There are two amusement operators here in town, each does VNEA (Valley).

2.) Multiple locations but those must have the operator's tables who runs that specific Valley league...they can't have their competitor's tables ('cept Big Dogs for obvious reasons). This rule sucks and hurts everyone, imho....get over it guys!

3.) 7' Valleys

4.) Coin op....$1

5.) Only $5 per player.

6.) The table is opened, by the decision of the bartender, 1/2 hour before competition starts.

7.) Four players per team.

8.) Four games per player (Round Robin, total of 16 games (four rounds of four games each)

9.) One table is used except for some playoff thingys where two are used for time's sake. We like to watch the matches and using more than one table makes that pretty hard to do.

10.) 8 teams or so per division and our league had three divisions this year.

11.) Not enough!...lol...we came in first in our division in the fall league and didn't make enough to pay for the fees we put out. If we had won the division playoffs ("City Championship") then we would have come out ahead.

12.) Most of the bars provide a free drink for each player. Some provide T-shirts, too, but that is rare. Some provide the "sanction fee" (~$10 or so per player).

13.) Leagues seem to be growing here. I mean we have 10 leagues! in Des Moines! Everytime some player gets really p/o'ed, he starts a new league.

Here's our choices:

BCA
VNEA
VNEA
City league (no ball-in-hand, but has been around since 1968--on the east side only--they don't like us west-siders and our BIH rules...seriously!) the lowest fees and highest payouts, btw.
Metro (basically Valley light)
Players league
TAP
East side league (they can't even get along with the City leaguers!)
APA (the highest fees, for sure)
I forget the last one....maybe my memory is shot?

1) BCA Paradise Valley Pool League, Phoenix Metro Area, BCA
2) Travel League
3) Valley 7'
4) Coin, $.50 or $.75
5) $7/player/week
6) 1/2 hour to 1 hour before league starts
7) 5 players per night, up to 8 total
8) 5 games, 1 against each opponent
9) 2 tables
10) 12 in 'A' Division, 10 in 'B' Division, 10 in 'C' Division
11) 100% goes back to the players
12) Sponsoring Bar pays $50/team they sponsor into the league. Every player on both teams gets 1 free drink per league night of the drink they are currently drinking. (No ordering a $8 drink if they were drinking a $3 beer). Year-end banquet with free food, Money Prizes to teams, Blind Draw Year End Scotch Tourney.
13) I played in many different league systems, but this was the best scenario for a Wins/Loses league. 100% Money back to the players. 25 total games per night

(1) APA Thursday night 8-ball division at Fast Eddie's, Fairfax VA.
(2) In-house APA division (actually two divisions that play side by side, many players play in both).
(3) 9' Gold Crown III's (one per 2 teams, plus 3 for practice and overflow matches).
(4) No.
(5) $8-10 if you play a match. Twice that is you play a match in both divisions. The range is because different teams kick in different weekly amounts, since some captains like to run a surplus so that nobody pays for their playoff matches, for example.
(6) The tables are available from 6:00 PM (match play starts at 7:00) until the management notices that the team matches are done with and sends the waitresses over to apologize and tell you they're going to have to start charging table time if you want to keep playing. This can be anywhere from 11:00 PM to 1:00 AM.
(7) 7 or 8.
(8) Match play, APA 8-ball, races range from 2-2 to 7-2 to 5-5 depending on handicaps.
(9) One at first, option to annex a second table if it's 10PM and you're running slow (and they haven't all already been claimed by other teams).
(10) 8 or 9 in each division.
(11) Not sure. I personally don't really care, and don't count on ever getting any payout from the league.
(12) Chance at advancement to nationals in Vegas (expenses paid), and trophies.
(13) As a comment, I think it's a good business decision to keep the tables available for league players to keep playing after the matches have ended, assuming there are no paying customers waiting for those tables. In my own experience, league players are likely to leave rather than pay for a table they had been playing on for free, whereas if they stay and keep playing for free, they are likely to keep spending money on drinks.

1. NWPL (Northwest Pool League) Seattle, WA.
2. Multiple Locations
3. 8' Barbox tables
4. Coin-op. $.50 to $.75 depending on location. Most locations open the tables for league match play, One we use quarters, one we pay an extra $1 per player Green Fee.
5. $35 one time registration, and $5 per week
6. N/A
7. 5-8 players per team
8. If there are 5 players on the team each plays 4 games. One player plays 5 (The format is a team best of 21 games)
9. two tables
10. 8 teams
11. Not sure on the numbers, but most if not all goes to final cash payout. Each player receives $1 for each game won for the session. The final of the session end tourney payed $1000 to the 1st place team and $700 to 2nd. All 8 teams got paid out.
12. Mainly for fun and good competition. Some of the bars do a 'Halftime' and the bar buys a round for the visiting team. Trophy goes to the winning team at the end.

This is a non-handicapped league. The one-game format makes for some exciting matches. The teams are pretty loyal and don't change a lot from year to year.

(1) APA, Hickory, NC
(2) The hall I play at has enough tables to have one in house on Wednesday 8ball, one that goes out Tuesday 8 ball and another in house Sunday 9 ball
(3) Played on 9 footers, but during cities we played on 70something 7 foot Diamonds
(4) Nope, but they are during the City Tourney
(5) I pay $7 p/week and $25 p/year. This goes for 8 and 9ball. If you play in one or both 8 and 9 ball it is still $25
(6) It's available one hour before and one hour after league is over
(7) I'm actually not sure of this. I would say unlimited, but I am sure there is a number
(8) Depends on handicap
(9) We have one table for matching up and one for practice. Occasionally if it's going late we open up two tables
(10) I believe there are 10 teams p/league, but it may be slightly more
(11) Nothing goes to end of session pay out, but if you win the Cities our LO gives out a decent bit of money for Vegas. Back when APA played Valley Forge she would send the first place team to Vegas and the second place team to Valley Forge which she would give a good bit to both.
(12) Trophy and I think you get a discount at various places for being an APA member. Some halls I would play for would let me play all my pool for free because I played at that bar
(13) Please add any comments or information you think I should have asked and didn't.
