League last night....

Thunderball

Auto rep for belly laughs

Heres the deal.We play at a PH that has that has enough teams (apa) to be completely in house. No traveling. As a natural byproduct of this we know all the teams and players well....its been this way for years.

Last night we are playing the final playoff game of the year.We win we move on to the "cities".

Heres how it starts:
We put a guy up and the match up is a toss up imo.He does everything he has to do to lose.

The next match should go our way,but it doesn't and we are down 0-2 in a race to three.

We put up a three just hoping. They put their best player on him,no doubt trying to close the deal. But our three plays great and gets the win easily.

Next its on me.I draw another five so its an even race to four wins.I play pretty well (for me anyway) and never really have to sweat it.I won 4-1 and it should have been 4-0.

BUT during my match, near the end,my bud brings over a beer and says "I' bet you 5 bucks you can't get out from there". I had about 4 balls and the 8 so I said "your on" and I started shooting.I lost my shape a little and decided to play safe (despite the bet) for the win.I pay the man.The safety works and I have ball in hand with two balls to go.

My bud (and team mate) say again "I'll bet you five bucks you can't get out" which was funny as hell, and really he was just letting me get my 5 spot back.So I say sure.Play the two balls and he pays me back.
Match over.

We were now 2-2 with our best player left and they know it.We are poised to win after going down 0-2 to start the night. Then it happens. The other teams captian calls a foul and for a forfeit. He also calls to league rep to confirm and thats that.We lose 2-2 with a forfeit, why you ask?

Gambling.

I've been a league player and captian for a long long time.I would NEVER EVER even think about making this call on another team.It would never even enter my mind actually.Hell,it bothered him he just could have said so,like I said we have known this team for years.I think he wanted the win anyway he could get it.

Opinions?

What a total chicken sh!t, pus*y ass move!!! I guess rules are rules and you can't really say much about it now. There are times when rules are drafted to prevent certain things and the way they are drafted creates the possibility of unjust results. That is why a lot of laws are selectively enforced. I guess this guy doesn't mind being a gigantic pus*y.

I would have said we weren't really gambling - it was just a joke between friends.

My opinion..........KNOW the rules and NEVER let the other team get the upper hand on even a trivial rule. I've played leagues for many, many years and have seen the "sharp teeth" come out time and time again in crucial matches. Sure, you may know all the guys real well, but to some, winning means everything, no matter what they gotta do to win.

I had a situation occur a few weeks ago in a match my 16 yr old son was playing, he just started playing in league this year, anyway, the other guy openly fouls, my son called it, but said "foul" kinda softly, the guy goes ahead and shoots the shot (which was the eight ball no less) claims he didn't hear the "foul" called and takes the win by cheating. He's one of those "I play league just to drink" kinda guys and I didn't want to be starting a huge fuss over a game so I as our captain just let it go and I told my son to just let it go knowing he was the better man.

My son learned how dishonest some players can be when it comes to playing pool that night, I learned that many, many years ago. Sad, but true.

Best part of the night was my son beat him the other 2 games and the guy was really, really unhappy about being beat so bad by a 16 yr old.............kinda made my night.:D

League players... That's so stupid and trivial, I'm sorry that happened to you. That's a sh**y way to lose a match!

Last year when my cue got stolen I immediatly ordered a preditor. The day that my preditor came I had league. I didn't have time to hit any balls with it but thought I would use it during my match anyways. I had such a hard time adjusting to it, frusterated, I grabbed a house cue and started shooting with it. The captain on the other team was so anal and upset about me switching to a house cue (at that particular moment in time switching to the house cue was like the difference between night and day), he called the league operator:mad: . I never read the APA manual (and still haven't:o ) and didn't realize that there would be a rule over something as simple as that. Thankfully, I have a cue that I love and that stupid rule won't come into play again. As for the other rules... I still need to read the manual...  :D

All I know hilla_hilla, is I would be thrilled to have any any of the three young ladies in your avatar on my league team...

Wait for it......

Wait for it.....

Wait for it.....

And if they played pool, BONUS!!! :D :D :D

But seriously... If you are the one I think you are, you look a lot like a good player I knew back in WA state.. A Ms. Kimberly Kirk.

some players are just no fun

Hilla hilla, sorry to hear about your experience. Sounds like the guy had some ego issues ... calling up the league operator no less ... geesh  As to Thunderball's loss due to friendly team wagering, that doesn't even make sense since it didn't concern the other team's player directly. Well, just move on since life's too short to steam over petty people's shenangians

I was going to type different, but this is the correct answer.

Team our operator on is doing, imo, quite a bit of things that I would consider "unsportsmanlike", and against the spirit of camaraderie. I could see them doing the same, if the opportunity came up. Furthermore, I get the feeling when playing them they would relish the opportunity, and would rather win on a technicality than outright.

At an ACUI championship match, a buddy was not watching when opponent missed a shot. He waits a few seconds, then shoots again. States that he did not see the foul, so not a foul unless there is a referee. Cheater ends up winning match

Same thing happened to my teammate in SD State 9 ball tournament, opponent misses, then shoots again after realizing that my teammate did not see it.

Some people need refs for the entire match.

rules

Bottom line is always know the rules backwards, forwards, and sideways. Make sure that your team always has at least one rule book on hand too. I prefer to play a "when in Rome style" meaning I will play however the other folks are used to playing. However, if someone tries to manipulate the rules I can almost always burn them multiple times before the night is over by strict enforcement of the written rules. I don't have to do that too often before people get tired of game playing.

A note to those calling a foul on another player, always say it clearly and as a flat statement and step up to the table while saying it. Being the least bit tentative encourages those that would cheat to cheat.

I'm not sure what the point is about the rules....although I don't disagree, just saying I know the rules well.

I knew the one about NO gambling as well.

This, while technically gambling, was just two teamates goofing off and having fun.Thats pretty much why my team shows up.

Just so you guys get a better feel for how casual this league is,not one 8 ball was marked. Not one player, not one time during any of the games played, not once.Hell we have not marked a pocket in house in two years.

You guys should know me at least well enough to consider me sane I think (or hope) and trust me when I tell you....If YOU had been in my shoes YOU would have been pissed, just as I was.

Chicken shyatt p*ssy azzed way to dig a win that had all but slipped away.Nothing more.Period.

I gotta say,I sure felt like an ass for not seeing it coming, but truthfully I would never had guessed it might.

Anyhow,I'm done biachen...thanks for the replies.

It is certainly understandable that you're pissed. Were any words exchanged when that happened? I wouldn't be able to hold it in.

I was HOT.They knew it,but I let our current captian handle it.I told him what I thought about it loud enough for him and his team to hear. Then I walked off.I would have a not handled a direct confrontation well....I'm no badass and haven't fought since school, but this probably (may) have escalated....at least to a cussing tirade out of me.

I walked to the bar,and his whole team filed out in one big bunch....no fun in hanging around I'm sure...

sadly,my bud and teamate who intiated the "gambling" sent me at text saying he has quit the team and won't be back next session. No doubt he feels responsible some what if not entirely.
I hope I can change that,he's a good friend.

But thats just another reason this whole thing pisses me off.

Maybe a better answer to the above quote is "not yet".

We were playing in a state tournament and my opponent and I had a long, drawn out, chess-like, game. I finally got down to the eight and had to kick off of a side rail to make it. The eight ball was basically sitting in the pocket, so not a really big deal. I marked the pocket and made the shot. The guy shakes my hand and says good game and walks away. As he's walking back to his table, one of his team mates comes running up and points out that the marker was barely touching the metal piece around the pocket. He immediately calls over a ref and complains. The ref told us that since he had shaken my hand and said good game it meant that the game was over and not reviewable. Otherwise, I would have lost the game due to a really stupid technicality.

What was the actual rule that you broke?

If it is "You can't change cues during a match." what are you supposed to do if your tip falls off, play the rest of the match with no tip?

Equipment "failure" allows for a change in the apa.

Most sane people would not give a dam at all though, either way, regardless.

While reading the story I was thinking to myself,

"Why would his teammate bet he couldn't run a couple of balls, especially during playoffs? Doesn't sound like he has much confidence in his team."

While I hate the rule nazi's in my league, nothing like putting added preasure on your own team when your trying to advance to the next round. just my $.02.

There was no added pressure. It was five bucks and more about how we bet and bullshyatt around...hence the same bet when I had BIH with two to go.

Although I get your point erok and its a valid one if I were new to the game or league,or five bucks means I walk home or skip a meal.It was funzies though.

Hmm, i can't disagree with rules. I'm a big advocate in regards to them. They're there for a reason. So I can't say that I hate the rules. which brings to the point:
If the opposing captain had noticed this in the begining, he should have consulted with the other captain first, and give the captain a WARNING, or re-aqquaint the captain about the rules. If it's a neighborly league, or whatnot, the opposing captain should have taken that into consideration of at least firing off a warning. In addition to that, the other captain should have known the rules about gambling and explained to his team mate that gambling is prohibited and to please refrain from doing so during this particular match, otherwise the teammate runs the risk of losing a chance to goto the cities.

The only thing I can agree on, ist that the opposing captain should have at least gave a fair warning: not everyone can remember ALL the rules.

It could well have been a neighborly league normally - but when it comes down to going to cities or not, some folks will toss neighborly out the door.
