League last night....

In some places like where I'm from APA is played on great nine footers that are maintained perfectly with 860 simonis. not on bar boxes. Now all of the city and national tournaments are played on 7 foot Diamond smart tables.

Don't write off APA or any other league. It is a lot of fun. It is not always the most competitive pool that you will play, but all in all, it is very enjoyable. Yes, some teams get blinded by the lure of a Vegas trip, etc and will try every technicality to get the win, but it is not really any worse than the dude that tries to work on you when you are gambling, etc. Some people are just a--holes...the league play doesn't cause it.

I have been fortunate enough to have been on teams that went to Nationals in Vegas for 4 of the last 6 years. It is a real blast, but it is also a whole lot of work. Give it a shot. All in all, it is a lot of fun.

here's another example of a team of A-holes

I wouldnt call the guy a friend, but just someone I know from when I shot APA 8ball leagues. Well said guy and his team went to some APA tournament, I think to qualify for States or something IDK, i didnt go. Well they are in a match and if they win, they are in the money.

Well the team they are playing, is getting smoked, and loses. But does a half-assed job of filling out thier score sheet. And basically leaves it blank except for thier team member's shots and scores. And when the match was done, the dont turn in the sheet and leave the area. Well this guy's team grabs the score sheet and fills in " thier team " part. And then turns in the sheets to the TD.

Bam!!!! other team shows up and complains to the TD that the other team filled out the score sheet and its a forfiet. Well this guy being honest says yes, they did fill in " thier team's " part because this other team didnt fill it in. TD says your not suppose to touch or do anything to the other teams score sheet because it would be consider'd cheating. So they were disqualified and this other team goes on to win the tournament.

Now people can say, well its a messed up story cuz your hearing only thier part, but after talking to all of the guys on the team, separately and all of them having the same story I believed it.

Sako

Wow, a lot of bashing of the league folks and then you make a comment about a Sako. I'll bet you a nickel($500) that I can outshoot your Sako with an AR-15 rattle gun. Do you really want me to talk about Halls, Stoeles, and Nesikas or a half-dozen more really accurate rifles? A Sako is like a Cuetec.

When I was 7 yrs old my father bought me a league table, yea that little table. 2-footer.
You sell yourself short playing in league with all the bangers, and another round of drinks. This isn't pool at all to me. If you can't play with the big boys, then you practice and take lessons till you can! All the differen't slop rules each league uses. crap. I'd rather play snooker, play straight pool on a 5-10. Even a pro 8 is small. I think they should change the cue for all league players-they should have a standard 36" model like in bumper pool.Same game. Almost all of the poolhalls are Bars now, with 7 footers so the league players don't have to play on the nine footers. They might have to shoot a shot more than4 ft-boy thats hard. But it is not about pool at all it is about alcohol and how much money the bar tab is. I always joke with the apa boys here- ok you get the 8 and the breaks and 50 in straight pool to 125. It'd be different if they played straight pol,or banks,or one-pocket. It would be chinese here- I'm different- It'd be like the military say ok boys lets see who can hit the target at 25yds with a 50 and it's actually made to shoot 2000yds. I use Sako's, the best moa out there. mark

Heres the deal.We play at a PH that has that has enough teams (apa) to be completely in house. No traveling. As a natural byproduct of this we know all the teams and players well....its been this way for years.

Last night we are playing the final playoff game of the year.We win we move on to the "cities".

Heres how it starts:
We put a guy up and the match up is a toss up imo.He does everything he has to do to lose.

The next match should go our way,but it doesn't and we are down 0-2 in a race to three.

We put up a three just hoping. They put their best player on him,no doubt trying to close the deal. But our three plays great and gets the win easily.

Next its on me.I draw another five so its an even race to four wins.I play pretty well (for me anyway) and never really have to sweat it.I won 4-1 and it should have been 4-0.

BUT during my match, near the end,my bud brings over a beer and says "I' bet you 5 bucks you can't get out from there". I had about 4 balls and the 8 so I said "your on" and I started shooting.I lost my shape a little and decided to play safe (despite the bet) for the win.I pay the man.The safety works and I have ball in hand with two balls to go.

My bud (and team mate) say again "I'll bet you five bucks you can't get out" which was funny as hell, and really he was just letting me get my 5 spot back.So I say sure.Play the two balls and he pays me back.
Match over.

We were now 2-2 with our best player left and they know it.We are poised to win after going down 0-2 to start the night. Then it happens. The other teams captian calls a foul and for a forfeit. He also calls to league rep to confirm and thats that.We lose 2-2 with a forfeit, why you ask?

Gambling.

I've been a league player and captian for a long long time.I would NEVER EVER even think about making this call on another team.It would never even enter my mind actually.Hell,it bothered him he just could have said so,like I said we have known this team for years.I think he wanted the win anyway he could get it.

Opinions?

What's weird about this is the penalty. The APA team manual clearly says no gambling, but it doesn't say what the penalty is. I suppose it's up to the league operator, but a forfeit doesn't seem mandatory, at least according to what I could find in the team manual.

I agree, I would never have called anyone on that, let alone call the league operator, but that was a really dumb idea by your buddy, and a bad mistake to follow it by accepting the bet. Why take the risk?

I captain a team in an in house league myself, and like you said, everyone pretty much knows everyone so I'm surprised that the league operator would let an incident like this decide a playoff match and possibly create some long term bad blood in the room.

That league operator must not like you. :D
