League payback

Sorry to hear for your loss, sounds like your league is the APA. Unless you are the first place team, all you do is donate to them time and time again. If you are wanting to make money during league play, join a money league where someone is taking a small paycheck to run an in-house league, not one who tries to get rich fast from everyone else. If all you want to do is get good practice, then join any league you want and be happy with that. League play is great practice for those money games or local tournaments where payout is larger. In-house leagues always pay more to the players, ALWAYS! Enjoy your practice!

It doesn't seem fair but it is hard to earn a living from league play unless you become a LO., and very few of those do.

Play poker where the house takes a cut. You could win all night and eventually you will leave with less than you starts with.

I have never had anyone tell me to join a league because I will make money. In fact it is even hard to find any tournament that is really cost effective for the player. If they were then pros wouldn't need sponsors or backers.

There are those that are in the league for the cash, and others that are in it for the competition and fun. If you are in it for the cash, best find out what the pay outs are before joining.

In my league, if you don't hit at least 3rd place, you aren't going to break even, or win money. Most folks know they are never going to recoup their cash, but just love the fun and competition.

We've done this dance before, but here goes...Apa payouts depend on the territory and the l.o. Meaning that not every Apa area operates the same.

Here in middle-of-nowhere Maine, our l.o. pays out quite reasonably. 3 sessions per year. Each session pays out 4 places, for each division in his territory. (By my last count, it was between 12 and 15 divisions. Maybe a few more.)

Amounts depend on how many teams in the division. We usually have from 12 to 14 teams in 8-ball, and the first place team usually gets just over $800, second place just over $400, and incrementally less for 3rd and 4th. Again, in every one of his divisions, wax session.

We pay $40 a week per team, or $8 per player. My guess is the extra $2 per player helps fund the payouts. It works quite well.

We've had this discussion before, so I know other areas have decent payouts, as well. Apa is different everywhere. Don't assume because its one way where you live, its gonna be the same everywhere. Meaning payouts, sandbagging, pro's, and skill levels...

Have fun.

Thanks for all the input here.I guess its not actually the league you play in but the people who run it.By my post i didn't mean to knock league,s i just didn't realize some didn't favor the top teams or players in general.
Leagues are fun but i got to ask would you still play in them if you really didn't have a chance to make a little more then what you put in?
Not me for sure.

Do you think that passionate people with vision somehow get corrupted when they check a box on their tax returns?

Did you know that Merryl Streep is a for-profit actor?

I own and operate a for-profit business right now. I'm also on the board of directors (chaired it for four years) of a $20 million non-profit organization.

Before I started my business, I ran a local monthly pool tournament series for a couple years, organized and ran a straight pool league, prepared instructional videos and put them on youtube, and developed a new system for rating players. There was no money involved.

Now I have a big billiard parlor. We have 35 league teams and another 50 people per week playing in weekly tournaments. We're running a $3,000 added tournament this weekend on the 7' tables. We do instruction and try to find ways to get new folks into the game. Of course the numbers have to work out. They do for any organization.

But the key is I AM THE SAME PERSON. I don't somehow now think of things in terms of dollars. I think the same way I did before. And I've spent hours on the phone with Mark Griffin. And I've had my friend Randy G. multiple times as a house guest. If you think these people are motivated by money rather than vision, then you imo are displaying an extraordinary lack of insight.

As to the finances of pool league for a player, there are many things to consider. If you play pool league at Fargo Billiards, then you pay $12 each week.

And this is what you get.

(1) Free table time all day on league day. That included before league, during league, and after league. (More than half the players are still around three hours after the league matched are done).

(2) You play your match on two clean diamond tables that are more than six-feet apart, have simonis cloth, balls cleaned every use.

(3) knowledgable staff

(4) free drink

(5) A $300 (per person) contribution to your travel fund for ANY player who goes to Vegas for either singles or team

(6) A payout for every team that ranges from about $300 to about $1,000 (per four-person team) for a 15-team division.

(7) A player appreciation night with a big spread of free food, keg of beer, fun scotch-doubles head-to-head speed pool events and other competitions, and many giveaways.

(8) A team tournament with $1500 added.

(9) A free hour of pool to be used during the week for every table run.

TAP, TAP, TAP. Sounds like a great place to play league.... excellent !!

Not for nothing i could careless about payout for leauge as long as i get to smash people on the pool table makin them say who the hell is this guy or say great i got to play this guy im good.

I mean my job give me extra money for rent aside from my regular pay like i said i just want to destroy people on the table.
