Leather Cue Cases worth the cost?

This is my first post, after searching the archive I am considering purchasing a 2 by 4 Leather Cue Case. Consider either a Justis, or Whitten.

I do not carry much in my cases, but would like the two pouch model. My question is after looking at both Whitten’s, and Justis’s does either make a separate compartment for a Jump Handle?

Current case made in China does have a Jump compartment, but I am on my 3rd one in three years as the Chinese vinyl & zippersjust don’t hold up. But maybe it is just time to buy another Chinese case.

whitten

I use whitten cases and can vouch for their amazing quality. As for the pouch, if you check out www.whittencases.com in the custom section there is a case with a specially designed ball pouch. If he can make a pouch designed to fit balls he could easily do one to measure your jump cue. Just give him an email with the dimensions and i am sure he will do it for a reasonable cost.

Can't speak for justice though as i have never used one.

My opinion on leather versus vinyl has always been that the vinyl could always do what the leather can do only with less and easier maintenance. This is ONLY if you search and find a premium quality vinyl. Leather has a tendency to crack, fade, and shrink if gotten wet. I realize that extra care should always be given to one's cues/cases, but this is not always the case with many pool players.

3rd one in three years  ??? What the heck is the problem? If it is only the zippers, they are like the vinyl, there are zippers and then there are QUALITY zippers. The problem is getting a quality vinyl case WITH a quality zipper. My Porper case has good vinyl (not great), but it has flimsy zippers. Shopping online doesn't help things at all. Probably the best way to find a decent vinyl case would be to go in-person to a very large billiard outlet store or attend some kind of a billiard equipment expo.

I will say this for the leather cases, they do have the "coolness factor" !!! But me being on a fixed income, I have to find places to keep my costs down, and my cases are just one of the "casualties" of this process. Heck, for the type of playing/traveling I do anyway, the vinyl more than meets my needs.

The best scenario would be to be able to hand-pick the material and zippers and have someone build a cue case to your specifications. I bet there is someone out there that may already be doing this.

Good luck in finding a good case!!!

Take a look at OnQcase:

http://onqcases.com/site/

They are also a good quality and reasonable.

Is leather worth it? Depends on how much you paid for your cue and how much you want to spend.

If you can get a good vinyl case for $100 and it lasts 3 to 5 years the leather would have to last 12 to 20 to offset the price difference. They are both going to wear and probably protect the cue the same. The leather will just wear better and take more abuse but still show wear and tear.

If I were to get a leather case, this is the guy to get it from with out a doubt.

He makes the best leather case money can buy...Attention to all the "details"

That being said....I paid $50 for a (Elite) case last year at BCA Vegas...It has every pocket I would ever want, compact easy to carry etc. and does not have one sign of falling apart yet.

However, I personally would expect a good leather case to last for at least 20 years if cared for correctly....so $400 may not be out of line for a real leather case.

All it does is hold your cue

I've said it here before.... I was getting ready to purchase a high dollar fly reel when a good friend astutely pointed out, "all it does is hold the line, save your money and get a better fly rod". Made sense then and still does.
Your cue case helps determine how good you look when you arrive.
Your cue helps determine how good you look when you depart.
Me, I rather look good when it was all said and done.
Now if money is no object and stylin' is where its at, have at it.

I just bought a Whitten 42F in brown lizard with brown trim... and I love it. It's leather, of course... embossed with a lizard pattern.

The longer pouch accommodates my Lucasi jump stick butt... which stows very nicely inside the foam pad that Whitten includes with both pouches with their cases. I simply cut out a long rectangular chuck out of the foam... long enuf and wide enuf for the butt... which fits nicely inside the cut-out. The foam maintains the dress shape of the pouch and the butt doesn't shift around inside the foam cut-out.

If it's the zipper alone bothing you, you might try an upholstery shop, one popular with the local hot rod set. They are used to working with both leather and naugahyde (Think of the poor naugas...giving up their lives for cue cases ;) ) Anyway, such a shop would find it relatively easy to install a higher quality zipper. All that said, I'll confess to drooling a bit when I visited the Whitten site. I currently use a porper 2X2...wish now that I'd bought a 2X4. It does protect the cues well...
