Leather vs. Irish Linen vs. Unwrapped

Which did you choose and why? For me personally, irish linen is close to perfect, but sometimes is feels too slick to me. I don't like unwrapped because the cue sticks too much to my hand. I'm wondering if leather would be the way to go in a custom, or if linen is really the best for me.

Leather on my Schuler--I really like the feel of it, but it can get sticky with chalk. Of course, my old Meucci Originals has finish over the wrap--don't know why they do that. I'd only go wrap-less for the beauty of the wood.

I can really play with any of the three you mention. Its all personal preference really. Just find one you like and stick with it.

I have no problems with any wrap type. I like wrapless personally as I love the beauty of the wood and it is one less item in the cue to maintain. :)

It's kinda like Condoms, do you like lubed, un-lubed, or Ribbed or non-ribbed. No one can tell you what is best, it all COMES down to personal preference and nothing else.

So just like with condoms try it and see if you like it!!!!!!!!!:)

Easy isn't it!!!!!!!!;)

What's condom? :D

Jazz <--- prefer wrapless

Wrapless - my favorite, I can really feel the cue
Leather - the grip is OK
Linen - I don't like, is too slippery

My personal preference is wrapless as in one of the previous quote I like the beauty of the wood and the feel. Also I am a right handed player and I chalk with my right hand so the chalk gets in the linen wraps.

My cues are either wrapless, or have a lizard/leather wrap. I don't own any cues with a linen wrap, but that may chage if a really nice cue comes along.

I like both Leather & Wrapless not a big fan of linen. However you need to use whats comfortable to you and dont worry about others opinions.

i prefer linen as hand get sweats a lot..i just keep wiping my cue if i use leather..wrapless is not so bad and it feels a very solid hit for me..but linen is stil the best for me.

Same. I get confused when people say linen gets slippery while for me, wrapless gets slippery because my hands sweat. My stroke becomes off because I have to grip my cue tighter (if it's wrapless). While linen, it helps my sweaty hands :embarrassed2: as it soaks in the sweat I think.

I imagine leather would make it slippery for sweaty hands as well.

anddddddd

there ya have it!!! I think the *feel* is better w/o a wrap, but like *hit* that is awfully subjective and personal opinion, depending on who you ask. As to the beauty ... no doubt in my mind wrapless contributes another piece of *canvas* to work with.

I like the feel of stack leather or wrapless the best. In the summer my hands sweat. Linen absorbs the moister and makes the butt end of my cue feel heavy.

Thanks. I'm not asking people to tell me what to get, I'm asking for people's experience with each of the choices. Looks like a good mix so far.

I like elephant and smooth leather.

Linens are also different. The linen on my Bender is smooth like silk. On McD's it feels coarse. On Meucci's it feels like a wrapless.

wraps or not

One other consideration if you are leaning toward linen is, how the linen is put on the cue. Many repair people and cue builders will sand the finished linen wrap and then press the wrap with starch until it's slicker than a baby's bottom. Sure it shines and is smoother than silk when handed to you. Great for presentation (Looks) but does it accomplish what it was initially intended for??? Linen was put on cues to absorb excess hand oils and sweat generated during long play. It was designed to be washed occassionally and replaced when necessary. Just how much do you think your new super slick linen wrap will absorb???? Linen was also put on for the texture it provided. Over the years it has been pressed more and more and sanded and starched. Great for a collector cue to keep value but not necessarily for the playing cue.
You as the consumer can request a linen wrap that may have more texture (not sanded, pressed less, even without starch). Talk to the repair person or cue builder and express your desire. They should listen to you. If they refuse you CAN go elsewhere.
Pressing the linen itself may knock down some of the high spots(slubs in the linen) but it will also provide a different level of texture and 'without the starch' absorb much of the oils and sweat generated as it was designed to do. Try different levels of pressing too. A cue repair person or builder should be able to provide textures between coarse and super (glass) smooth. You decide which is best for you.
Sorry for talking so much.
