Leather Vs Linen

Here is my experience:
Linen on avg froma quality cuemaker runs $40+ --- Find original cortland and you could see a dramatic increase in price.
Leather - basic cow hide runs $100+ on average depending on the cuemaker. Get into exotic skins (lizard, kangaroo, ostrich, etc...) and you will see a step increase.
At the end of the day I agree that Leather is the way to go. It is easy to clean and makes a plain cue stand out.

Linen, leather, cork, rubber, or no wrap at all... each has their admirers and detractors. Like so many things in life it's all a matter of what YOU like best.
I like the feel of smooth leather and I prefer it over linen. That doesn't mean that smooth leather is best for everyone who likes leather it simply means that it's the best for ME. Another guy might love lizard, while someone else may prefer or snake or ostrich or elephant or whatever. It's all good as long as it's what works best for them.
Another guy or gal may think a linen wrap is the nuts and it is--for him or her.
But here again, one may like pressed linen, while another likes it unpressed, and yet another one loves only a specific type or brand. Again it's all good as long as the individual choices work for each one of them.
If you have some friends that would allow you to shoot with their cues, try a few different cues with different wraps and see how the wrap feels to YOU.
When it comes to choices it really is all about you.

The Joys of Having a Choice!
The choice of wraps is strictly cosmetic. Of course, wrap lessons "feel" but no big deal - playing with a wrapless stick feels like your playing with a house cue (not good) or a Meucci (worse!). The Woim just had to get a dig at mooch into his post on wraps.
I personally love the feel of linen, especially after it's aged several months... That's me, though. You could be different.
Sometimes leather becomes sticky but your local cue repairman has a solution for that!

Cost is more for leather. Linen runs about $30-$40, leather, $100 and up. I've had two cues with leather wraps. I ordered a Scruggs with leather and it was ok, I wound up selling it but not because of the wrap. My current cue, a Dan Dishaw, had lightly textured leather on it when I got it. I played with it for about 6-9 months and then had Dan replace the leather with pressed linen and I've never looked back. He didn talk me out of it, twice I've had the cue, with the linen wrap, for 12 years, now.
I don't like the feel of irish linen that has been just wound on. If it's not pressed, I won't have it. Just my personal preferance, but there is a difference in the way it feels, to me.
