Lessons vs Experience

People often wonder what is more valiuable....Getting experience by playing with better players or by someone telling you what you should do. What I am about to offer might be a great offer for all of you. Instead of paying $300.00 per day for someone who will try to get you to play just like they do. I am offering to play anyone for $5.00 a game for you to get some experience from playing with a top pro. I have a pool room with a very nice new Diamond 9ft table with a day rate of $5.00 from 10am to 3pm. If interested, call Larry Nevel at 608-201-4568. Thank you.

Are you going to stop between every shot and explain what you plan to do to get the run out, etc. - i.e. actually try and help the folks who take you up on your offer? Or just spank people every game and hope your opponents can figure things out for themselves? :/

Larry,

Are you still in Wisconsin? Or are you InCanada?

Also is that $5 for the whole day or 5/hour?

Ida know. I kinda would rather pay someone to come to my area and teach, like Scott Lee. I mean, for $500-$600, (or whatever he charges) you get dead solid PROOF of what you are doing wrong, in the form of video footage of your chewed up stroke, which he procedes to correct. In fact, I am planning on hooking up with Scott in about a year.

If I play a pro, and he runs three racks on me.. Well, what have I learned? I watch Accu-Stats videos all the time. Doesn't mean I step up and run out every time.

Larry, I'm sure you are a wonderful player. Perhaps you might want to talk to Scott Lee or some other really good instructor locally, and get boned up on the latest advancements in coaching/teaching. There are a TON of people who have put off pool until middle age, have money now, and can take the time to learn. If you are a good teacher, a travelling pool school like Scott Lee can be much more lucrative than you ever expected. I'd imagine he probably makes 100K per year, easily, and can take off a few months if he chooses.

I only say this because I think you are probably worth more than $5 a game. Don't sell yoursef short. It seems like something has happened in your life, and you need to make a living finally off your game. If you are a good teacher, I think a travelling pool school is going to be a much better deal than playing $5 a game. Plus, if you prove to be a capable teacher, your teaching career should extend far beyond your active playing career.

Good luck man,

Russ

Worth more than $5 a game? Do you have any idea how many games he could have a beginner stuck in an hour? He could play as fast or slow as he wants to get what he wants.
Anyways how about we bump it to 10 a game and I'll play you some. LOL Just kidding. If you want my opinion I would play a top pro for a couple bucks a game no more.

The point was, is I doubt he is going to make 50K+ per year, by playing $5 a game. I don't think that many people are going to be standing in line to drop a few hundred a month to him. Even at $400 a month, you need at least 100 people willing to donate that much, to even make a respectable living. A good travelling instructor can make 40K after expenses standing on his/her head..

Russ

Are you risking $5.00 per game of your own money, or are you charging people to play you, win or lose? What you might consider is traveling to pool rooms around the country and charging a group rate per hour to play/teach several people in a one hour session. You would probably have to work a deal with the house, but you would get some cheap advertising and word of mouth on the web. If you are ever in Austin, I'd enjoy playing some cheap sets with you.

Larry's offer is great...

And yes! He's worth more than 5$ a game...
He has the most powerful (best?) stroke in the world!
If I was in your area, I would play you.

Yeah if you look at it that way but he didn't say he was trying to make a living doing this. It sounded like to me that he is just trying to make some extra cash and help people out along the way.

Spectacular Offer

hey larry thats an amazing offer, i live in Ketchikan Alaska and i would do anything to take you up on that offer. A good friend of mine is moving to Claire Wi is that anywhere near you? And whats the name of your poolhall? If i ever get out to Wisconsin be prepared to fill your wallet with my 5 dollar bills.

Larry, I don't suppose you feel like moving to the DFW area? :D
Nice idea, I'd pay that just to watch you whup me. With advice added? Worth it to me.

Thanks Russ...I'll look forward to working with you any time you're ready!

Larry...Russ is correct. There are some great developments in teaching, that you could benefit from, by learning. Several top pros have come through our pool schools, to learn how to teach better...Allison and Gerda among them. Email me, if you're interested.

Are people HONESTLY complaining about spending $5.00 a game to play with a world class player?

I respectfully submit that you can learn only so much from an instructor. You have to have the drive, determination, and simply ambition to improve your game. Most good players you've heard of were mostly "self taught". I can only imagine how much playing Larry all you want for $5.00 a game would benefit your game.

Hey Larry, do you ever come through Northern, WI? I live in a town called Ashland. It's about an hour and a half away from Duluth, MN. Anyways, I would love to play you sometime. I say this knowing you would probably walk all over me :-)

I'm pretty sure Larry's not looking to supplement his income in any major way with this offer, guys. I'm darn sure he could find better action than that. When did you last get a chance to play Effren for any stakes? That's the kind offer. I'm a bit disappointed myself, since I'm from Wisconsin but don't live there at the moment. Nice to have you back though, Larry.

An idea!

When Buddy Hall last came through here, after his presentation and such, they had a session where you could challenge him for $10 a game, and if you won, you got to keep your $10.

??????????

I believe I would rather get my lessons with the 5 and the break. Would that be possible?

Whaddayamean, "if you won you got to keep your $10"? You didn't get paid if you won? What was this, a charity event?
