ok, here's the deal. if i expand my garage apartment out by 12 feet the pool table is coming back upstairs. and if that happens i'd like to have a light over the table - but not a regular pool table light. i'd like to get something a little more decorative/ornamental, dunno what the word is, in case one of these days i ever rent this place. and if i do rent i wouldnt want a pool light right there.

so, my question is, i noticed in Home Depot and Lowe's they have some nice looking lights and i am wondering how much wattage i need to adequately illuminate the 9 foot GCIV? most of these type of lights are kind of "centered", if you know what i mean. would one with three bulbs (180 watts) be good enough? or perhaps one with five bulbs (300 watts)?

p.s. some of those types you can actually point the bulbs slightly in one direction.
 
i believe its recommended to have at least 400 watts for a 9 foot table. I have 6 75watt floodlights (450 watts) on mine and its about perfect......
 
Most 9-footers that I play on have incandescent lighting and they have four lamps... usually 100 Watts each.

The 8-footers have three (3) by comparison.
 
I have one of those brass pool lights with 3 green shade. I have 150 watts in each, but it really could use 4 shades/fixtures. I think you would be better off with a flourecent (sp?). The older I get, the worse my spelling gets.
 
I'm not sure if you talking about some kind of track lighting, be careful not to get the kind that is meant for accent lighting. (or those types of highly concentrated bulbs.) They may look cool in the store, but you'll get all kinds of weird shadows on your table where it will go from dark to light...

flood lights like Scotty mentioned is much better...

read my initial post closely. i said i do NOT want to put a normal table light over this table in case i ever find myself needing to rent this place. if its rented i wouldnt want a pool table light hanging from the ceiling, but rather something decorative.

thats why i am looking for options, something that will look ok up there and light the GCIV at the same time.

and yep, i am serious about something similar to the Home Depot link.

Sorry, I just looked at the light you selected and skipped the rental thing.

But if you're going to move the table, or sell it, whatever, wouldn't you just take or sell the light along with it?
 
Thats what I think. Lights can be hung with a hook into a rafter and only leaves a small hole. That HD light would be a big mistake. Well unless you want dark corners at both ends.

honestly,

the Watts wont tell you anything, exept how much energy it consumes...

you should check out how much LUX (light intensity) you need.

putting that aside:

here is the light i installed in my room. it looks very modern (why i chose it over a diamond light who doesnt really fitted my 'style' of decoration. its 2.47m long (8ft+).

I see your dilemma but you would be making a big mistake if you put that light over your table. IMO get yourself a pool table light and change it later if you decide to rent the place. The holes (for hanging)made into, assuming drywall, can be overed very easily. If you are buying this light for a very short period of use over your table then by all means go for it. But for any extended amount of time you should go with the pool table light and change later.JMOFWIW

why would i be making a mistake?

the only way i can see that it would be a mistake would be if it would fail to illuminate the GCIV. and i dont see how that can be with 5 bulbs and anywhere from 60 to 100 watts each.

I am no professional BTW but I don't think IMO that you will get the table coverage needed to illuminate the playing surface. Long lights are used for a reason. Do what you want? But the wattage doesn't play a big part with illumination. THAT, I do know!::) :rolleyes:

This is what I have above my 8' table, and I have two daylight CFL that only use 70 watts total, but put out about the same as 300watts total. I didn't have to drill any holes. It hangs on a normal light fixture box, and when I move all I have to do is take it down and hang another light in the same place. It will take me about 10 minutes if I mess around while doing it. LOL

That seems to be the perfect solution to me txplshark.

Why ask for advice and then refuse the well thought out, logical solutions? Seems to be the pattern here DCP.
