Buckeye burl and other burl can be very light weight also. I have one piece that's comparable in weight to dense Styrofoam. In order to increase weight and to mitigate (by stabilizing) the often fragile and inconsistent composition of these woods, having them stabilized, or injected with a resin will usually double the weight but also produces a more durable stock for turning requiring much less time and caution normally required to avoid catastrophic errors like large chunks coming out, stress cracks or naturally occurring voids leaving large holes in your project during the shaping or turning phase of your build. Reputable companies that offer this service usually offer the option of having a normally clear resin to be dyed which can produce some amazing results by accentuating the woods natural beauty without the use of stains, dyes or bleach. This process can also give the desired look of several of the more colorful burl and spalted woods when naturally colored woods are not available or simply too expensive. A mixture of clear and gold dye... Yes I said gold gives buckeye burl the most natural and breathtaking color I have ever seen. Finding that one piece of wood that has all the possible colors in the dimensions of your project is made much easier through dye infused resin stabilization....no one has ever said this wood looks fake, colored, dyed or stained. It simply gives anyone the time and talent of "finding" the best wood out there as far as anyone else knows!
