Linen or Leather

I realize everything is a personal like or dislike. I'm looking at a Schon H4L Hoppe tribute. The leather looks real good and the white/green linen looks good also. I'd have to special order it if I want with linen. It's also available in Wrapless. Might have to flip a coin. I have no intentions of re-selling it. Just curious if anyone purchased a leather grip and did not like the appearance or feel. And how is Schon's leather? Thanks, Frank

Schon's leather wraps are very well done. I'd only caution against leather if your hands tend to sweat a lot or you play in humid conditions. I've used both linen and leather for years and like them both. I personally prefer black leather on classically-styled, steel-jointed cues like that Hoppe tribute.

For that particular cue I think I would give the edge to the leather. As for quality, Schon is first rate.

I've got a McD leather, so I can't speak to the quality of other manufacturers. I personally like it, grew on me after a while. However, my next cue (probably Joss) will have a white linen wrap - so nice looking...

How difficult is it to get a wrap converted (or replaced)? (not trying to hijack!)

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about the leather on Schon's, but I do play with a leather wrapped cue, and like it very much.

Going from linen to leather was very easy and fast. I was able to choose my wrap from a pile that ranged from a cheaper plasticky feeling one all the way up to very expensive, super soft elephant ear. I chose an moderate embossed one for the tactile feel, and especially for that particular color.

The cuemaker did warn that most people who get leather go right back to linen, usually within the first six months. He didn't know why. After almost two years of playing with mine, I don't know why, either... But I like leather so much that when I later ordered a custom, I automatically asked for leather again.

I do suggest hitting with someone else's first, if you can.

At risk of yet another hijack attempt, I would be curious to hear what people think of cork...

I'm sure it's no big deal. I would do that if I did not like the leather. Best bet would be to post under Ask the CueMaker.

Cork might be cool.

I'm buying the cue just for something different. Might also buy a Predator iKon2 w/leather. They are returnable if I do not like them. I generally return a cue only if the finish is not perfect when I open the box. I do not have any friends that own leather grip cues. I cannot try ahead of time. Keep the wrap posts coming. A good question is not a HiJack. I'll get enough replies to make a decision. I'm also curious about other wraps.(cork). I did stay away from the Predator Sport. That wrap looks like a bicycle handle.

Just my opinion but since you shoot with a wrapless cue I would say stick with that.
I think linen is the most slippery and leather is better but only if you keep the polish on it.
If getting the leather from Schon, I suggest you get the Monkey texture. That is the least slick - in my opinion.

Didn't say I shot with a wrapless. I do have wrapless cues. I prefer a wrap so I know where to place my grip. I tend to grip at the rear of the wrap. My pinky lightly contacts the bottom of the wrap.

look to it.

Depends on what was on the cue originally and what you want to go to next. For example, if you have a linen wrap on the cue now and you wanted a standard leather wrap I believe the wrap area would have to be turned down a little to accommodate the leathers thickness.

If you had elephant ear leather wrap you would probably not be able to go back to linen.

If I were you I would post this question in the cue makers section for a more absolute answer.

I'm a smooth leather fan. Just feels right to me and on a Hoppe style, it looks right too.
I ordered it on my first semi custom and on my first real custom.
I also have it on my favorite cue:grin:

How about posting a couple pics. Or do you have thread somewhere?

my cues in order were
joss,joss,abe rich, joss, joss
all linen wrap
then
gilbert (leather x2)
scrugs(linenx2)
olivier (leather)
nitti(leatherx2)
i want to also say the nitti is my current player
to be clear
x2 means 2 cues
for me a textured leather feel better thana linen wrap
especially a linen wrapped that was pressed

GoldCrown,
Here are the pics of the "semi;custom" It is a Pruellier, hits well and looks nice.
I didn't tell him I wanted "smooth" leather but it still works for me:grin:

I just made the switch from nothing but linen wraps for over 20 years to leather. I used a friends cue with leather a couple weeks ago and it instantly felt clammy in my hands and I don't have a problem with sweaty hands. On the cue I just got though, I love the leather. There really was no adjustment for me. It was more like the feeling of a new pair of shoes; it feels the same, but yet different. FTR, I have a black elephant ear wrap on the cue.

I prefer linen on any cue. Leather makes my hand hot and sweaty, pretty uncomfortable. Wrapless cues will also make my hand sweaty and uncomfortable.

I recently switched to leather. Lately irish linen just feels too slick in my hands. I'm even thinking of trying a wrapless cue.
