*I already know TSA says no cues*

A member here had a custom
3 piece travel cue made and had posted a thread about it about 15 years ago on these forums. I did a search and none of the search queries I’m trying are returning any hits. Does anyone remember the thread and can get a link? Or does anyone have any newer examples.

Thanks!

I have one made by Sheldon Lebow.

I think Fred also has one.

Thanks Lou. Can you elaborate a bit on the front joint? From your picture it looks like maybe a coarse thread aluminum screw, that would thread into wood/phenolic and not a brass insert.

Have you ever taken it on a plane? If so, when was the last time?

Thanks.

It's like a fiber collar with an aluminum pin, no insert.

The main joint does have an insert. On the front joint, honestly, after a bit of play it goes away and you don't notice it any more. It plays very solid. I had Sheldon make the weight, balance, and taper match my Ginas. It has an ivory ferrule.

I've traveled with it many times, most recently earlier this year to Puerto Vallarta and have played 3C with it down there several times.

That was likely my thread to which you’re referring.
Andy Gilbert made me (strictly) about a dozen 3-piece cues that you could travel with,
and I called them Traveler Cues. The name has stuck for 3-piece cues. They were perfect for the intended use (travel) and could be taken on planes, motorcycles, etc.
The cues are long forgotten. I might still have the first one that was made for me.

Thanks all, this is what I was after. I half wish I never got on the Predator bandwagon in the late 90's. If I didn't, I'd be able to play with any house cue off the wall. I'm thinking of making one or having someone make me a 3 piece cue with a 314 shaft front end.

Thanks, I found your thread. https://forums.azbilliards.com/threads/the-gilbert-traveler-cue-unique-and-limited.331572/

I don't recall your thread though. The Sheldon Lebow name rings a bell, but Lou's cue does not look familiar. Maybe it was Freddie's:) In either case, they all look nice thus far.

To clarify, was this on carry-on or checked baggage?

I'm planning on carry-on. I think I can get away with it. It's worth a shot anyway, IMO. I just put a collapsable aluminum tripod in my carry on, and it seemed like a 3 piece cue would be the same.

the tsa explicitly says no pools cues in carry on. you will end up checking it or surrendering it and/or missing your flight.

I'm aware. I'm willing to take the risk. I think they've never seen a 3 piece design and would let it through.

I no longer carry it on.

It's still small enough to fit into a normal sized piece of luggage. I guess I could try carrying it on but, to me, it's not worth the potential hassle of being stopped at the TSA screening point, having to get out of security, schlepp to luggage check-in, then get back into the TSA line.

Good luck, though.

I go to PV every year. Where did you play 3C? The only room I have been to is the one just north of the Malecon and I don’t remember there being a 3C table in there.

It’s in the old town/romantic part of PV and is called Deportivo Los Molcajetes on Francisco Maduro — they have several heated, well maintained 3C tables and some pool tables but the pool equipment is not so good. In spite of that there is a group of expats that gather there during the day and often conduct some kind of tournament. I let them be.

The room holds open 3C tournaments and you can get a handicap and play. There’s also a room in the “downtown” area frequented by the locals that has 3C tables and, I am told, better maintained pool tables. But despite my best intentions I have not made the trek.

*I already know TSA says no cues*
Is so, so lame that TSA says no cues but allows canes in the passenger cabin. It is basically the same piece of wood or metal and our cues have one thicker one and one thinner one. Government organizations (TSA) that do not use logic in their rules.
