I like the 20 year old Austrian to do well in this one, she undefeated so far and should advance with ease. Karen isn't here to fluke the winning ball this year:rolleyes:

I watched it live and that was Karen's probably luckist roll she will ever have in her life. Hill Hill or 10 to 10 in the World Championships and rattles the 9 in the corner and comes all the way up the long rail and drops in the corner. Nice way to make it into the semi final. Actually Jasmin was up 10 to 8 but started to get a little nervous and made a few uncharacteristic mistakes. She is the only girl/women to play in Austria's highest league. Last season I believe 3 times she ran 100 an out in her first turn at the table. Everyone here is wishing her the best, she will need it. It was the first time I ever saw Pan and Meng Meng and some others play and I was very surprized at how many and how strong some of the Asians play.

First matches today

Jeannie Seaver misses one ball and defeats Jennifer Chen 5-2. Jeannie is now 2-1 and Jennifer is now eliminated. Val Finnie didnt play perfect but fiarly well and wins her 2nd match and is now 2-1, her chances much improved for advancing.

The arena is still freezing though a bit less damp today as the rain has stopped. They continue to have all doors open and there is constant cold breeze throughout. Players are blowing on their hands and covering themselves with jackets. In many ways this is such a well run event, yet the continued lack of attention to the climate is just unexplainable, as is the lack of a door to the men's room but that is another story i guess.

Tifffany Nelson plays in a few minutes using a borrowed cue and borrowed clothes as well. Her luggage is still in the USA. She needs this win.

Jennifer Barretta is playing with a new cue as hers was lost in USA on a non stop flight from Raleigh to Newark on Sunday. It is not expected to be found. She has to win her next 3 matches or be eliminated in all likelihood. She can do it though.

In a match played on the TV table between who many believe to be the 2 tournament favorites, Miss Ga Young Kim bested Kelly Fisher 5-1 improving her record to 4-0. Miss Fisher is still in good positon to advance with a 3-1 record. Though my short term memory is victim of the 60's i can still say with 80% certainty that neither player missed a ball. Kelly missed 2 safeties which was enough to cost her the set.

In other action, Jennifer B won her first match. Wendy Jans lost to Tiffany and is in danger of being eliminated while Tiffany's chances are looking much better now at 2-1. Xiao Ting won another and Monica was ahead 4-0 in her match.

Jennifer Barretta beats Xiao Ting Pan 5-4. After an 0-2 start Jenn is now 2-2 and in contention in her group. XTP is also 2-2 Im pretty sure. Tiffany Nelson beats Taiwanese girl on the Hill and is now 3-1. Val Finnie wins and is now 2-2. Jeannie Seaver wins her match 5-2 and is looking pretty good with a 3-1 record. Jennifer Chen however is now 0-4 and it would seem pool has not been a recent priority for her.

Thanks for the updates Nostroke!

btw: There are English results listed here:
http://www.cues.com.tw/event/world/06wwpc/match/score.htm

They are updated a couple of hours after the other site, but some may have more luck opening this site.

For jsp: Rubilen Amit whitewashed Liu Shin Mei (former world champ) 5-0

It's terrible that the venue is cold! That's about the worst thing you can do to the players.

Hey Nostrok,
Are you watching this stuff on the interenet or some saitlitte tv connection?
That really sucks about Jenn's cue, if it is the one I think it is, she has had it since day one, a gift from her husband!

Sorry Colin- Xiao Ting loses her last match and is out. All the WPBA ladies except Monica (despite 3-2 record) and Val (2-3) make it through.

J Seaver only 3rd in her group with 4-1 record.

Wendy Jans gets 2nd in her group with 3-2 record.

Jennifer B wins last 3 matches to squeak in.

A great showing by the WPBA ladies in this strong field.

Neither girl- I am here in Taiwan!!

Dont't fret about Jen's cue-it is sponsor provided and i believe it has already been replaced.

Thanks for the update Colin.

I can finally view the scores now. Nice to see that Rubilen Amit won her last 3 matches to finish the group stages 3-2. I'm assuming that if there's a tie in the group stages, the tie breaker will be the number of wins?...or the number of losses? Either case, then Amit will advance, along with Jasmin Ouscham who went undefeated and Shin Mei Liu who also went 3-2.

I'm hearing a lot about this Jasmin girl...sounds like she's the real deal. But don't count Amit out!

I'm sorry to hear that Jennifer Chen and Pan are out. :(

No problem,

btw: It's good to see youngster Zhou Meng Meng, who I played with last week :D , won her last 2 matches 5-1 ad 5-0 to get through group B.

ZMM, who goes by the English name of Rebecca defeated Jasmin Ouschan for the World Junior Title in 2004 (or 5?).

Nostroke!

You are so funny! No wonder you have all the scoop. Have you ever thought of investing in a decent camera and reporting on some of these events? There must be away for you to recoop some of your expense for this "hobby" of yours....!

It was 2004. 2005 Jasmin won all the marbles! I heard Meng Meng aka Rebecca had some kind of visa and or sponsor problem and didn't make it to the Jr.WC. FWIW

Have fun over there.

Well directly off the arena floor is a mens room that has no door and never has had a door. There are just 2 pieces of fabric hanging from the top of the entrance that flap around and are not fitted together so that anyone glancing towards the door will see guys at the urinals. They could have provded a door when this place was built and i guess the cost would be around 1 cent a day after all the years its been here but instead they keep putting up these near useless pieces of fabric. I mean it isnt the biggest deal in the world but i just wonder why?

It seems to me there are many places to eat around that are fine for probably 99% of world's population. I did have a small surprise when i went to 'Chinese Restaurant' and couldnt get any kind of simple beef, chicken and noodle or rice dish and the spare ribs i ordered didnt resemble spare ribs at all. Looked like a simple pork chop to me.

From what ive been told, the Chinese Restaurants in America are mostly "Hong Kong" style. After all who was getting out of Shanghai and coming to the USA way back then. This place had all "Soup based" meals which im not a big fan of but that is the way it is in the 'Chinatown' places in the US also.

Tonite however i went to a "deli' and got a terrific mushroom and pasta dish for around $7. The bakeries here seem to have rather bland not-too- sweet goods but hey thats what they like i guess. Not much whipped cream or chocolate. The dessert i had last nite had what looked like chocolate but turned out to be "bean paste" It wasnt great but not horrible either.

Anytime you leave your own country things are gonna be different. My first trip to Amsterdam i ordered Spare ribs (again with the ribs) and they brought me a rack and i askled for BBQ sauce and they looked at me like i had 3 noses. They gave me 3 choices of sauce. Hot Sauce, some mayonaisse type sauce and some other crap i forget but no BBQ which i had dumbly thought would be universal.

Anyway i cant see the food being that big of an issue here in Taipei-maybe Kaoisong is different. There is even a 'Subway' less than 2 blocks from the arena and an Outback a lil further.

OK too tired to type anymore-That's the story.

Never gave it serious consideration. As i mentioned before the short term memory is gone. I'd have to take notes continuously and that would ruin the fun of it all.

My RT ticket here cost just $640 with taxes and all but i had a $300 "we are sorry" coupon from NWA so it isnt costing me hardly anything.

Hey Davey!

Taiwan is a funny place, you tend to love/hate it at the same time. Alot of the architecture just makes zero sense, and bathroom configurations are all over the place.

If you decide to stay longer have GYK take you shrimping...it's a must-do activity in Taiwan. Also check out the poolrooms in Tonlin, the one on the 9th floor (on the left, not the one on the right) is my old home room and the one GYK plays out of now. There are 6 poolhalls in that building!

Anyway, check your email soon I'll talk to you there. Have fun and thanks for the updates. GO GYK!!!!
