Live Scoring of Women's World 9-Ball Championship

Wendy Jans true into the last 24 !!!!!! WOOOHOOO. GOGOGO BELGIUM!!!
she finished 2d in her group. I think its very nice she got a wildcard, even if she is not the FAMOUS player anyone knows, she just wins every freaking tournament on this side of the pond. I hope she can show some of her skills, and can show the world again, that we DO have some good players. we arent the top of the world, but i think seeing the small means ,$ , experience, small country, etc we Are doing ok.

:D wendy for president :D

Someone explain ...

What does 'RSA' stand for? Russia?
What is the difference between 'NED' and 'NOR' - Isn't Norway part of the Netherlands?

Well, Monica is on the way back, but other than that, the USA did pretty good.

After seeing Jennifer's first 2 scores, I was feeling like she might be in over her head, competitive wise, but she pulled it together for 3 wins after that.
And that is the kind of heart and tenacity we all like to see.

no :) norway is not a part of nederland. Belgium used to be untill... 2006 - 150 years = .... something year.

norway + sweden + finland are the 3 north european country's that are close to the northpole :p nederland isnt close to the northpole :p

Jasmin made it through the qualifiers undefeated, she seems to be shooting well as does Kelly Fisher. It's unfortunate what happened to Jenn's cue, I can't think of a much worse time for it to happen. Despite this she made it out of the group stages which is pretty impressive considering the circumstances.

A couple of pictures of players

Here are a couple of pictures: (before they went)

You're going to love this jumpshot!!!! lol by Tiffany.
And a pictue of Solly's Wendy Jans.

I think it stands for South Africa, I am the golfaholic and in the international tourneys, both Gossen and ELS are earmarked as being from RSA and they are from South Africa.

Can someone explain the scoring? What are these "points" and how does one earn them? Why does winning the same number of matches with more games get you in and winning the same number of matches in fewer games get you out? If a player won all 5 matches with the minimum number of games they would be second to a person who won 5 matches but played twice as many games to do it?

Women's 9-ball tournament starts with intense stares

By Sean Scanlan
CONTRIBUTING REPORTER
Thursday, Mar 02, 2006,Page 20

Advertising On a cold afternoon where most players didn't bother to take off their jackets inside the Taipei Gymnasium on Nanjing East Road, 48 of the world's best women pool players began an intense competition to determine who would be the world's best.
Taiwan's top-ranked player, Lin Yuan-chun, was in a gruff, almost irritable mood minutes before her first match. Her attitude belied her nickname, "Female Assassin," as she has made a habit of staring down opponents with her stealth-like game.

With a WPA ranking of No. 6, Lin is one of the early favorites in this four-day tournament. Today she played well, but not well enough to put her in a good mood.

A product of Taoyuan area pool clubs, Lin began playing at the age of 17, and has been a professional for six years. She routinely plays against men, including World 9-Ball Champion Wu Chia-ching.

Lin has appeared on televised tournaments in Taiwan, gaining the skills to compete against the world's best.

Formidable competition, in fact, is close at hand, as Jennifer "9mm" Barretta of the US entered the gymnasium in a pair of cowboy boots and an iPod strapped to her belt. The cold, humid weather didn't affect her. She quickly stripped off her coat to reveal a pink stretch top that accentuates her blond hair and her pin-up figure.

Her opponent, Estelle Bijnen, a tall blond from the Netherlands, didn't seem to be distracted by Barretta's good looks.

Bijnen suffered early losses in Kaohsiung last year, quickly knocking her out of the competition.

Bijnen needs better early results this year to advance to the single elimination round of 24 players.

"The humidity affects play a little bit -- it makes the cue ball stick a little more and everything is a little slower," Bijnen said.

For those unfamiliar with women's 9-ball, matches typically take one hour to play, much slower then men's matches, which can be over in less than 30 minutes in a race to five format.

"The difference between men and women is in the head," Bijnen said. "Women think of everything while men simply concentrate on the shot ahead of them."

She admitted that some matches can proceed slowly, as women like to use defensive plays while also taking plenty of time to line up shots.

Still, the slow play isn't expected to hurt turnout. While admission is free, organizers will limit the audience to 5,000 spectators a day, on a first come first served basis.

"This tournament has always been very successful and has always drawn a large crowd," Robert Huang, organizer of the Amway Cup, said. "There will be no less than 3,800 spectators a day during the tournament."

Over the past eight years, the tournament paid for travel expenses and appearance fees for top-ranked players such as Allison Fisher, and Jeanette Lee, the Korean-American sensation also known as "The Black Widow."

This year, however, the event is doubling as the Women's World 9-Ball Championship, and prize money is taking the place of appearance fees.

"Jeanette Lee's appearance fee rose to US$10,000 per day this year," Huang said. "We weren't prepared to pay that type of money for her to play."

While some fans may regret the loss of such high profile players, this year's Amway Cup will feature attractive and talented Asian players such as up-and-coming South Korean challenger Kim Ga-young and China's Pan Xiaoting.

Alright, I'm confused about the scoring(still), the invitations to participate, the schedualing and now "appearance fees" figure in somehow? Do the appearance fees have ANYTHING to do with invitations to the WCs?

Someone in the know please explainthis to me. Using this link-http://www.baroc.org/06amway/results/indexen.php and the story on AZBs front page, please explain how Monica ends up in fourth?

Three players with 3-2 match records, each with three points (match wins I assume), one has to win 22 games and loses 14 games, one has to win 22 games and loses 15games, Monica wins her three matches in only 19 games and loses 14 games.?? ??
The front page story on AZB says she lost out by one rack! WHERE! Her 14 racks lost beats #3 players 15 racks by one, her 19 wins to get 3 matches beats #3 players 22 racks to do the same! Some one please explain where my thinking on this is wrong.

I would if I could Terry. Win-Loss percentage maybe?

Re: The appearance fees, the previous event which has run for years used to be lower prize money but paid appearance fees for Alison, Karen and Jeanette. They thought they could save some dollars this year it seems, by naming it the World Championship, but the ploy didn't work.

As these events get little exposure for Karen and Allison, there is not so much incentive for them. Makes the whole championship title a bit hollow and it's another blow to the WPA I would think.

Nope, it's not a percentage thing. I just ran the numbers. Only thing that makes sense is if they use results of the three players matchups. If they did that then yes it works out (Monie lost to both).....THIS TIME. What if each had won and lost a match against the other two. If that's how they're doing tie breakers they may run into trouble.
Have to agree that without Karen and Allison it looks funny for the WPA, but maybe it is completely innocent. The stories about the girls arriving from the Carolina Classic would seem to indicate the girls that didn't show may have given it some thought and just decided they didn't need the hassles.:( Luckily the ones who showed seem to be getting back on track.

Hi Tbeaux,

I think I can explain how the invitations were issued...if that is your question. I will also address the appearance fee issue.

Let me start by explaining that the World Championship and the Amway Cup used to be 2 separate events. The World Championships were done through the WPA (World Pool Association) and each continent is a ceratin amount of invitations based on population and the pool organizations there. For example, Asia usually gets a high number of invites because they have a large population and the APBU has a large number of members. Europe has the EPBF, so they also get a large number of invites. This year, Europe got 12 invites, Asia got 18 (the 8 qualifiers were also all Asian players, so the field had 26 Asians total), and North America (the BCA) got 6 invites. The WPBA is not really involved....everything is done thru the BCA to decide which Americans will play. The 6 invites are issued by ranking thru the WPBA...but only the American players can represent the BCA. So, Monica Webb, who is 3rd in the WPBA would be the #1 American player. Vivian and Jeanette both declined their invitations...for reasons unknown to me.

In the past, the Amway Cup has always been an invitational event, sponsored by Mr. Tu. It is usually a 12 player field...and he would choose the players he wanted from around the world. They would be paid an appearance fee in addition to any prize monies. Mr. Tu would also pay their expenses.

This year, since Taiwan is the host for the World Championships, Mr. Tu chose to combine the 2 events...thus creating the 2006 Amway World Championships. Instead of paying appearance fees to the players, they increased the total purse to $70,000 USD. The champion will receive $20,000....as compared to the last World Championship when Ga-Young only won $8,000.

I do not know for sure, but I believe some players made the decision not to come because of the close scheduling of events...and because a player has to finish high to make any money. Even though the purse in increased, it is extremely top heavy...so you have to finish in the top 4 to do well. In addition, because of the short race and round robin format...there were no guarantees that any player would make it to the championship rounds. As an example...Monica Webb...who is the #1 ranked American player...did not make it through her group with a 3-2 record...but I did make it...and I also had a 3-2 record. But in her group, there were a couple other players who were 3-2, and so it was decided with a win-loss ratio. In my group, Ga-young won 5, Kelly F. won 4, and I won 3. The other girls won 2, 1, and 0. So it was clear in our group who would advance.

All in all, I think the decision not to play was a combination of 3 things. Close scheduling to WPBA events stateside, discontinuation of appearance fees, and the highly irregular format and prize money.

I hope that clears up any and all questions!

And on a personal note...I am having a great time! Money, format, scheduling aside....this was a wonderful opportunity to visit a new country and represent the USA on the world stage. Every moment has been exciting...and I'm very happy that I didn't let anything cause me to miss out on this experience.

All the best from Taiwan!
Melissa
