There's an up and coming player named Billy that plays out of Encinitas (Pacific Q). It's not what I'd consider a real "pool hall" where there's alot of action etc.. More just bangers, with the occasional small 5 dollar sets going on. Every now and again I can get a pretty good game in there, but it's rare. I've known Billy for about 4 years now, and he's been a banger (shot maker) for most of that time.. About a year ago he started taking it more seriously, and him and one of his closest friends Grant both stepped their game up quite a bit and raised the bar to low to average B players with ungodly shot making abillities. Billy had always been a bit of a ladies man around there, always showing up with some lil cutie here and there, but about a year and a half ago he met Kimberly. I always gave him shit for robbing the cradle (He was 20 and she was 16 or 17 at the time?) and he would always tell me "It's not going to matter when I'm 26 and she's 22, or 40 and 36 etc.." Kind of weird but he more or less "knew" that she was the chick for him the day he met her.
They immediately started dating and had been together going on 2 years now (a little over a year and a half I think?). Most of the young girls that hang around the pool hall kinda of irritate me, but Kimberly was exceptionally mature for her age. She was always pleasant to be around, and was one of those that you were just kind of happy to see walk through the door. This last Wednesday Billy came in and played the tournament, he was telling my g/f and I about how he was going to take a road trip with Kim (pretty sure this weekend) to Northern California. They were going to go up to Sequoya's (spelling?) and other spots like that, and just go sight seeing etc.. He was asking if we knew any good spots to stop or sight see etc. My g/f was actually giving me the eye becuase we don't do enough things like that.
Billy went on to defeat my g/f and onto the finals. He ended up winning the tournament on wednesday and was pretty happy about it as it's been awhile for him. He seemed pretty stoked that he had some extra cash, to which I assumed he would use on their road trip. I got a phone call yesterday from a friend at the pool hall saying Kimberly was killed yesterday afternoon. She was riding a mountain bike around town on a nice afternoon, and went into a intersection getting hit buy a large work truck. I feel so bad for Billy, that I'm not even sure what to say to him the next time I see him, I can only imagine the world he's in right now.
This is 3rd terrible thing that's happened to one of the regulars at Pacific Q in the last 2 - 3 months. It's like every other pool hall where there's a tight nit group of regulars and it's been a rough year so far for our group.
