Logan lathe question

I was thinking about picking this one up:http://hartford.craigslist.org/tls/3520241574.html
Any thoughts? The specs I found for this model put the distance between centers at 36", but I also found some info which put it at 31". The spindle bore seems good. I am very inexperienced with metal lathes, but I would like to buy something that would be a good companion to my cuesmith deluxe. Any and all input appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh Lerner

If it is a 36" lathe it will work as that is as short that will still give a full 30" between centers with a chuck and a tail stock center. What you need to measure is the amount of travel of the carriage. That is the determining factor.

I had one.
It barely clears end to end between centers.

I do not recommend Logan pulley system lathes.
They were made before OSHA days I think.
Changing speeds by moving the belt is a pain in the a ss and very dangerous.
That lid is heavy and can slam on your hand. It broke the tip of my ring finger one time. I saw it slam on my mentor's fingers as well. It's a horrible design. It has no counter weight and gravity is what gets it down. And it comes down hard.
If you have it as a dedicated lathe to do one task , it might not be bad.
But, as a main work horse lathe, I'd pass on it.
Look for Clausing 5300, 5400 or 5900 series instead.

I use that exact type lathe for my shaft tapering. It's 36" between centers. 31" if a chuck is installed. It has plenty of traval to use on cues. It's not the best quality lathe to have, but like Joey said it can be used on cues for somethings. I would try to talk them down on the price, but it seems to come with some nice tooling.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I'll hold off for now. Space is tight, and money is tight. I will wait for something a little better.

Cuesmith

Dont knock yourself out get a Cuesmith from Chris Hightower!
