Long Cues

I am considering a longer cue due to several things including my arms being freakishly long (35")... now I tend to use 30" shafts (a love of the OB shafts) ....

Now...Ive been told many different things from a normal 59" cue will be fine if the weight is set right.....Then again someone said get a 60" split 30/30....someone else said get a 31-32 butt weight for a 30" shaft but tell the cuemaker this before hand....send him ob blanks for matching...

So I come to you the most knowledgable of all...the folks that actually make cues....

Ideas? Thoughts?

there is a cue in the raffle section i made someone 60inches long 30x30 and a 6 inch extention. i have made a few cues 30'' butt 29'' shaft to move balance forward

Dave,

Thanks but I currently am shooting with a 59.5 ...The extra half inch I dont think would make that big of a difference...is there a cuemaker who specializes in longer butts?

I would say that most of us can do what you are looking for. I have built 30 or so longer butt ends. I prefer to keep the butt and shaft the same length. However I have done longer butt ends and 29" without any problems! You just have to account for the extra length when building the cue for balance of the overall length of the cue!

Ok so I guess the question I should be asking is who is capable of building a 32 or longer butt and from a cuemakers point of view is that the wrong thing to do?

Nothing wrong with having extra long butt made. But looking at it from a players standpoint and someone has experimented with this alot. It may not be necessary for the extra 1" or so length.I found out that if you just get a cue that is forward balanced you will usually hold the cue at least 1 to 2" forward. If you take a cue with a balance pt of say 18" you will tend to hold farther back on the cue than one with say 19.5" balance pt. A 60" cue with a 19.5 balance pt. should be plenty long enough.
Hope this helps. Just something to check for yourself to see if you hold a cue with a more forward balance pt farther up from the butt end when playing.

62" Kershenbrock

Hi,

I remember when I was younger hearing that the proper cue length for a player was measured at the height of the shoulder. So I ordered a pretty fancy point cue from David Kershenbrock.

In 1985 I paid $ 345.00 for a 62" beauty and that included John Wright's sale commission! Anyway the cue had a 31" butt. The forearm was 13" and the handle was 13". The butt area was a standard length. The shaft was also 31".

The balance was the same as my friend's who ordered his at a standard length.

I have an operational experience with long sticks. 62-65 " it is length of sticks for Russian billiards.
For example this one has length about 63 ". The butt about 31.5"

There are features but there are no contradictions which can prevent to make long butt for a pool cue.

Concerning cue balance. Certainly balance will be ahead in comparison with a usual pool cue but if to consider from bumper. If to count from tip end balance will be more behind than at an usual cue. One moment should be taken into account necessarily, the weight of long butt will be higher than usual. Therefore for long butt I would not recommend heavy wood such as an ebony, etc. And also did not recommend to make butt diameter same as usually, I think in this case butt diameter near bumper should be about 31 mm (1.22") maximum. But this assumption only.

And about DBK Cues........i now know several guys who tested his *russian weapons*- and they were ALL so upset about the special hit of his cues. Especially ppl who already owned cues from incredible cuemakers(like Scruggs, who has really a reproducable product with a hammer hit) bought a DBK Cue. And he can do almost anything u want from that what i heard:)
I could bet- if u re gettin a cue from him, you ll be satisfied!

I am also in this same boat, but also have the height to go with it. As of right now i'm using a 58" cue and holding it on the very end of the butt. Changing my stance and standing up a bit more has helped dramatically, and my neck doesnt kill me at the end of the night. If i put my 30" shaft on now it just doesnt feel right.

It would be nice if there was some type of rental service for cues. Make up longer laminated handles (to keep costs down) and longer shafts to dial in the proper length, then adjust the wood combo/joint for the desired hit. Just a little wary to order a custom cue and have it not feel right, only thing good about it being too long, is that it can be cut shorter. Or maybe maybe an extension package for the joint. Couple of different lengths maybe.

Another downside is if you like 0b1-2 shafts, they come in 30" max length. You can add a tenon for the joint collar and get it to 30.5" which would give you a 61" cue if you wanted to do 50/50. I noticed a difference in stiffness between my 29" ob2 and 30" ob2 with the longer shaft being stiffer for some reason. So does the cue have to be split at 50/50, or is this just to help save weight?

I make 6-pie laminated butts out of many heavy woods and can still come out at 18 oz. Can make you a butt 31" and 31" shaft to match.
On the other hand, I am 6'6" and played with a 30" shaft for quite awhile and have gone back to a 29" shaft. I usually grip on the handle, not the butt sleeve. Unless you are always playing on 9' tables and love to let your stroke out every shot there seems to be little reason for a super long cue. An all maple cue that is super long also seems to flex more, not something I like either.

I like a solid hit not alot of flex...
