Sad reflection upon the prize money paid, seeing the top money leader of the sport is under 100k for the first 6/7 months of the calendar year. Compared to snooker and even golf, pool is not worth it as a profession, seeing a quality player like Shane only earning $38K in prize money.

Yep! Plus, 18,000 in entry fees and expenses like gas, hotels , airfare & food eating away at the $38,000 leaves a net take home of $20,000 or $2000 a month for 10 months! Still got taxes to pay!

Lucky he has the rare cuetec sponsor! Rest of pool is on life support!

at under 100k annually, it's expenses and practice time....i.e. not earning that gets ya, not taxes

from a legal standpoint, depending on where you reside taxes are typically minimal to non existent, the key word being "prize monies", the ins and outs of this process can be taken care of by a decent tax guy for a couple grand a year in fees

from an illegal standpoint, taxes from payouts are easy enough to avoid

and ya, tough way to make a living when you need to be a world beater to get yourself 50k but that's been the case in pool for ages

And pool will stay that way in the states W/O TV and a big mainstream advertiser. W/O an organization that can't happen. Players and promoters say they want one...but most don't want one. If they really wanted one, there would have been one years ago. There are plenty of pool games and formats for at least a one hour pool show. One short action match a week would work until player names are known to general public and they have favorites to watch. Johnnyt

It doesnt matter,

We all Love this game but its time to stop comparing it to other games so far as the Money goes, it just aint there and we all have to switch our thinking.

There are thousands of Olympic athletes that make very little Money just like Pool Players, most have jobs and participate in the sport for the Love of it. Most of these same athletes have no chance at matching up or Hustling or teaching someone their sport for Money, they do what they do for the love of it.

Its sad but true that our game doesn't pay and if you want to do these without a job, you are going to do it without any real Money.

Something to compare with, here's the largest CS:GO gaming tournament, invitational for 16 teams. I think one team consists of 6 players:
http://en.esl-one.com/csgo/cologne-2016/

Prize pool:
1st Place - $500,000
2nd Place - $150,000
3rd/4th Place - $70,000
5th-8th Place - $35,000
9th-16th Place - $8,750

Quote from last year: "On Twitch alone, 860,992 fans watched the finals on March the 15th at the ‘pure’ peak concurrent viewership, with CS:GO being the most watched game on the streaming platform over the course of most of the tournament."

Almost a million viewers during the final.

Cuesport is dead :(

If you want to mention E-Sport, you can't ignore the 16,000,000 and growing prizepool of the next DOTA2 tournament. Yes, 16 millions fracking dollars for some guys playing a computer game

Its like construction workers ,, a drywall finisher simply does not make what a elevator mechanic does ,,one just about anyone can do with little training the other takes yrs of training and some simply can't cut the mustard

Exactly. The amount of money involved in E-Sports (a sport, really?) is staggeringly high compared to cuesports. That makes me want to cry...

EDIT: I bet a successful network pool game tournament could draw more prize money than US Open...

You have a good point,

Zion Zvi just won the Ginky Memorial and he works a full time job, so all those guys that have gotten their games to the Pro level that cant make a living playing Pool could still play at a top gear while working to make a living until one day hopefully the Money comes back to the sport.

A few things.

1. When I look at the list, it is different - wonder if they just updated it? Am I looking at a different list?

The list shows Shi in first with $96,217, Alex second with $76,917, then Chen with $61k and Orcollo with $58k.

2. Only $3k of Alex's money comes from Chinese 8-ball. None of Dennis' does (also, Dennis' money includes $20,000 from the Ko "challenge match" - money that I think has been conclusively proven not to have been bet/paid).

3. These figures are all year to date. Dennis has generally been grossing around $100k per year, and SVB has generally been grossing between 100k and almost $200k per year (from pool). Daz is also well into six figures (some from Chinese 8 ball). All of those figures are gross (so obviously expenses must be deducted, although I have seen some discussion on here about some top players getting their expenses paid - or some money towards expenses).

4. These figures generally (see the note about Dennis, above) do not include two person challenge matches. While this could theoretically include both up and down swings, if the pro is being fully staked, it is only an "up".

5. Some of the top pros will be getting sponsorship money, but I gather the figures are not generally huge.

None of this means the pros are rolling in dough, and there is a big drop off after the top elite pros, but the fact is that some of these guys are doing okay. I would love it if there were more money in the sport like there is in snooker, but the top pros seem to be doing okay.

Good point, King.
Most people don't understand that pool interest and money have moved away from the U.S.
The OP provided a common denominator with respect to the leading money winners:
Chinese 8-ball. Are we surprised? Where is Chinese 8-ball played. You got it...China.

And no, advertisers, more TV time, and an attempt to "organize" pool in the U.S. will not do much for pool here.

As King says, we simply have to face reality and 'change our thinking.'
I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I'm pretty sure it includes just simply
appreciating the game for what it is and/or staying up-to-date with the pool happenings
around the world.
That might be the best most of us can do because we're not going to play like champions any time soon. :)

Yeah, I imagine there would be a lot more money in pool if 1 pool team match could get over 5 million viewers, from a youtube video.

Tramp Steamer, your sarcastic post is not appreciated. Plus, makes absolutely no sense??? What does your post above have to do with mine above???

I get these members that submit these incoherent posts towards me and they make absolutely no sense. Adding Tramp Steamer to the ignore list unless he can explain???

Thanks for the post! I stay in my lane and leave people alone. They just come at me trying to stir up trouble and some type of online war of words.

I got better things to do than engage in the nonsense.
