Varner definitely got lucky. Earl did hit that 4 hard to play the 9. And he sure did sell it when it dropped!
With call shot call safe we would know for sure!! But of course Earl would've made Nick shoot again. Thanks for the link!

That's why the 9 should always have to be called like it is in the challenge of champions. Personally, I think all shots shod have to be called in 9 ball. It's a game of precision, so why allow so much luck. It would solve a lot of the problems associated with 9 ball.

Earl did hit that 4 hard to play the 9.

Trying to kick the 4 in the side pocket was much easier, and it would guarantee a win because you would have automatic shape for the 5 ball and the rest of the rack was an easy out. I don't think he was trying for the 9 at all there (he would be back cutting the 4 with a thin hit after coming off two rails all to play a combination where the 9 wasn't totally hanging either), but if he was it was crazy IMO. He definitely hit it hard in the hopes that he could get lucky if whatever plan he had didn't work out though.
