In a hay stack.:)

THis cue came to me for repair. It was made in the mid-90's . The butt cap is cracked and it's made of the reddish brown phenolic stuff that's no longer available. Would anyone possibly have a line on where I can get a piece about 1 in long? If not, would anyone have any suggestions as to how the stuff we get nowadays could be died or colored to match. Thanks in advance.

One good reason I do not like short pressfit buttplate.
Call Prather to see if they can sell you just a foot.
Atlas has $80 minimum order.
 
is that a Les Blevins?teh Mahogany would probably match up closer than you think over time.to find that exact color,tou would probably have to find a piece that has been sitting around for years.over time it gets darker.

Use cocobolo and core it with phenolic, use the good epoxy, slow dry.
Example
1 inch black bumper, core the coc 1.120 and put the coc over that so the phenolic will line the inner wall, bore to 1.020.

How about a burgundy color finish under the clearcoat? Maybe airbrush the color on the phenolic. Just a thought!!!!
 
Atlas has a $50 minimum order. Below is a quote from the website.

"Our minimum order is $50.00. Orders below this amount will be assessed a $10.00 small order charge."

If the dark wood is Bois de Rose, it has a tendenancy to bleed. Maybe some of the color from it could be used on some brown phenolic to match the color. I would try it on a piece before putting on the cue.
 
Thanks for all the responses. My customer has decided to replace the phenolic at all postions to get a good match, then refinish the cue.

Good Idea.

I've used black phenolic to core a bacote cap that I didn't want to split over time. The only difference is I left a small bit of phenolic on the outside to sort of cap the bottom of the bacote with the phenolic also, that to keep the corners of the bacote from taking a hit and splitting.

I like the look of wood buttcaps on a cue, just don't trust them without sleeving them.
