first i am very lucky to have a amazing cue maker within a half hour drive of me but he is very busy and im worried about how long it would actually take to make. people have waited years for a cue from him. why i respect his talent and knowledge i feel what i want for a cue is pretty simple. i just not sure how to go about shopping around to get one made. hearing some horror stories make me nervous.

when asking for a price should i just say what i want and they give me a price or tell them my budget and they say what they can do?

i think im pretty flexible with exact woods i want to use.

if anyone can recommend a cuemaker with contact info.

i would put my design idea here for all but i dont want someone to copy it. lol
thanks in advance.

I'd go with a strong "DON'T DO IT" on customs right now.
Just many many post about delays, not getting the cue, no money back stuff - even on recommendations.
I'd say if you go custom at least go with a big custom shop, like Schmelke or somesuch.

Take a Mezz or Exceed if you have money to blow.
Get a couple of shafts to change or try, depending upon your mood.
Same money, a lot more fun.

M (who does SO no believe in the myth of customs)

there's about a 800 cuemakers in the USA
you hear shit about a half dozen or so,
and this is the conclusion you come to?
should we consider ALL buyers are deadbeats also, because of a few?

C'mon Brent. He's an AZ'er. He can't possibly be wrong. There are usually 3 sides to every story and of course because we Cue makers choose, to not give ours because of morals, self respect and in general. No desire to play with the Queens. We are wrong. EVERYTIME.

Right now I'm hearing 5x of crap to 1x of "it went OK". Also in Germany.
After 2-3 years it's even worse.
Lots of cues are sold and the custom owner suddenly goes with a Mezz - why, I can only imagine...

So I cannot really say I'd go with a custom.
Of course there are 3 sides to every story, but it's about percentages.

I see your trader rating is zero. Look at my trader rating , webb and bhq. I call crap I don't think you know what you are talking about. I suggest stfu.

and the reason for that is, you hardly ever hear about good deals & experiences, because thats the way it's supposed to be.
nothing to ***** about, so nothing gets splattered all over the fukn internet about it.
you'll see on here a lot where a guy gets a cue, he's happy, everybody's happy , and the thread gets very little attention.
but.......... somebody has a bad experience and oh my god, 2000 comments by every yahooooo an the planet .
it's like a nascar wreck

So the buyer goes with a maker who can provide a "cheap" custom and then complains when they get "cheap" service? Or screwed altogether?

I'm relatively new to building cues, and every single day I get someone who wants a quote on a build... then they try to nickle and dime the price down, supply their own parts, glue parts up themselves yada yada yada... these are the people complaining when things don't go "their" way. Would you bring your own steak to a steakhouse? By all means go buy a production cue, but you will never get the quality of a true custom from a company that builds 10's of thousand cues a year to make a buck! Unless your name is one of the great makers your always in the red for building cues! I spent 40k on supplies my first year without seeing a dime 80% of that was on wood alone. 95 percent of custom makers do it as a passion not as a profit! 80 hours a day plus for the full time guys, and 40 plus hours for the part timers like me!

Most of us shy away from "cheap" builds for just this reason! It's not worth badgering our name from someone expecting a Lamborghini out of a Kia. So please keep up the bantering guys as your names are being added to the black list of every builder that reads this!

I think WalMart has a few Mizerak custom cues available with no wait and a return policy! Just saying....

My apologies to the OP!

This like every other thread on AZ has taken a turn for the worst all do to ONE poison spreader who thinks that they just have to take a poke at builders! :poke:

There are hundreds of quality builders around! Each to their own technique/style... do your research as ultimately it's "your" cue and that's what will make it special to you... remember pool is a mental game! Happy stick holder = confidence!

i only had one cuemaker who didnt deliver
7 cues from 4 other makers never had a problem
i would buy custom again

Most of the negative stories posted on the internet involve people who are putting together cues on a part-time basis with no business acumen.

There are plenty of reports of positive experiences ordering custom cues from a professional cuemaker.

If you made a list of all the active cuemakers, the number who have received reports of problems with completing orders is very small.

And remember, there is a flip-side to this: the bad buyer who has unreasonable expectations and demands.

TOUCHE! Very good indeed.

Ive probably had a half dozen cues made for me and they have always been a little late from the original quote. Its expected. Its being made by hand, and it is to be perfect. I understand im the customer and all the whiney crap you always hear but give the CMs a break. You try to take on the number of projects over the course of a year and not be a little late. Hell, ask my wife; I cant get any simple projects done in a timely manner. Much less manage 20 or more of them at one time and be able to give even a remotely accurate time frame. For me, if the cuemaker is within 75% of the time frame thay they've hoped to have it completed, he's doing a-ok by me. Again, i want perfection, and that cuemaker's name is going on that cue. My idea of perfection is probably far less than what his idea of perfection is. At least it would be in my book.
