Looking for cue ideas

Looking for a new custom cue and wanted to know what others would recommend. I currently play with a Gilbert and like it but I know there are other cues out there. Thought about a Rick Howard but someone told me they don't hold value and they went with a Lomax. Any thoughts. Trying to stay under 1K and wanting a plain jane or merry widow are the styles that I like best.

I'd look at mike Durbin. Excellent cues. Although the lead time is like 8mo right now.
 
Call Keith Josey and order a "Fancy Exotic Wood Full Spice" cue.... I know, it's a mouthful. Lol... You'll get a fancy inlaid full splice cue with two shafts for your budget. It will hit phenomenal and his fit & finish and shafts are right up there with anyone in the industry....912-356-1816...

Man, what's wrong with the Gilbert? I've gone through a ton of cues, including high end ones, and I've settled on a Gilbert out of all of them. Gilbert hits amazing and consistent.

I've never owned Rick Howard cues, but I buy & sell a lot of custom cues, and I can
assure you that Rick Howard cues hold their value better than Andy Gilbert cues.

For great playability, resale, still under 1K, and also holds value, try to pick up a used Sugartree, Chris Nitti, or Ernie Martinez cue.

Nothing is wrong with the Gilbert just want something new not saying I will not go back to the Gilbert because in my past I have had 2 Mike Guylassy, Carter, Barry Moore and other production cues but I have had two Gilbert's and one will never sell and the other if I could get back I would.

I've got a Kikel you could try out. I've actually got 2 Kikels, but only one is under $1000. They have great balance but have more deflection than Gilbert's.

A very satisfied Josey customer here. Actually, buying it has saved me money. I no longer search for that perfect cue. For me, it's been found.

But that is just me...

Get a Josey u will love it monster player and for everything u get can't beat price
 
Mike Lambros all day long. If you picked up a used player for under 1k I doubt if you'd lose a nickel on the cue until people stop playing pool.

Guido Orlandi makes a great Cue & has some proven ideas about a new type joint & LD Shafts... fantastic combination.

Another vote for Mike Lambros! I can't say enough good about the fit finish and playability ..... Look no further if u can find one under 1000.00

Then I'm here to tell you...you don't need 1K to get a great player. Your best investment is in the 29 inches above the joint. Everything below the joint is just decoration! Settle on a shaft first, and a good case...then with the money you have left, find a butt that appeals to you aesthetically.
In my signature below, the cue on top is $2500, the cue below is about $600, but I use the same shaft for both and all the cues I have. Personally I settled on the Tiger Ultra X about 10 years ago and have used nothing else...even though I have had many different butts! BTW, I prefer to play with the Adam/Helmstetter (I have several Adam/Helmstetter cues). If you have not chosen a shaft yet, try some different shafts owned by your friends.
Also, by using a aftermarket shaft, you will be preserving the original shaft and in turn you'll be able to get more for your cue if you decide to sell it at some time in the future. There...I added an investment tip for you!

You will get a lot of thoughts and ideas on what cue to get. It depends on how long you wish to wait. JR or John Bender can probably both build you a cue in under a year and I'd guess quite a bit under a year and they both make sweet cues.You could also just watch the for sale listings and if you see something that appeals make an offer.
I'd also consider limiting the ivory in a cue in this day an age. I really don't know what is going on with the proposed ivory ban but it could become problematic in the future. There are plenty of good cue builders in the forum just check out some of the comments with regard to them.
