Looking to purchase pool cue

Hey guys,

I'm about to purchase a pool cue. I'm just a recreational player. I'm a slightly above average league player in LA. My current cue needs to be replaced.

I need a serviceable cue. I'm willing to spend about $200- maximum $250 perhaps. I was about to head over to Triple A Billiards and figured I should get some advice before I went out and purchased a cue. Any recommendations?

If you mean AAA Billiads of Southern Cal. I checked their site and it looks like the carry McDermott and Viking. Either is good in the $200-$250 range.

Maybe check the "for sale" section here?

Very good advice. You can find a lot of options on here in that price range. If you buy a decent used cue, you'll get a bigger return on it when it comes time to upgrade again versus buying new.

You really should check the cues for sale on this Forum, you are likely to get a better deal and more cue for your buck. If you do go over to AAA I would personally look at a Viking, of all the cues I have bought, including customs, I still normally play with my Viking G27. It's nothing fancy just feels really good in my hand and hit's well. I guess that's a hint to me to maybe stop buying cues, let me think about that for a minute.....No that ain't going to happen

Hey guys,

thanks for the feedback. I ended up purchasing a 20 oz. Dufferin for $150.

Hopefully it does well for me!

I'm curious which Dufferin you bought. I have never really heard of it much and a quick google showed several for sale for $120 or less -> Link

I got a D-517

Looks like the guy cheated me because I now see you can get it online for $100!

Oh well!

Hey, if you like the cue and it works for you, then great, live and learn and enjoy your new cue. I am sure there are people here who have spent a lot more for cues they don't care for.

Where did you buy it? AAA or online? A brick and mortar store can not compete with online prices; however you get some personal service and a chance to try it and several other cues.

For the novice, the B & M route is better in my opinion. You will end up more satisfied with your purchase; although the price will be higher. Just my $0.02

The store in our town went out of business because they could not compete with the on-line folks. So if you have a nice store you like to go to and look at stuff and talk to the staff, be sure to buy something occasionally so they stay open, else you won't have a store anymore.

I was going to suggest the McDermott Warden cue with the G-core LD shaft for just a couple bucks higher than your price range, $270 on ebay with a case. For just 20 more than your stated price range you get a great brand name with a killer warranty, a low deflection shaft, and a case to carry it around in.

Oh well, guess you wanted to run out and buy a cue right away, enjoy your Dufferin.

give me a call, we can set you up with anything you might want.........give us a try...........Jim

I think the real question is why you would post on here, not even listen to any advice and buy less than 12hrs later?

dld

I did buy it in person at AAA

I went in there, tested out the cue, liked it and bought it.

Perhaps I should have waited, but I just felt like buying it there and then.

Maybe too hasty, but it certainly is better than the cue I already had- which had broken back weighting.

Buying used is usually better value for the money, only issue is trusting the seller. Thankfully on a board like this most users with a decent ammount of posts are pretty trustworthy.

Supporting local business is always good. It also gives you a more personal experience than buying online usually. Just bringing up the prices online, because I had never heard of the brand (or heard much about it). Always helps to do your research, but paying a little more and being able to try it out first can be worth it. Hope you enjoy your new cue!

x2

...and end up overpaying for a Dufferin. yikes.

For the type of pool in which I compete (bar table league), all I really need is a straight cue with a decently maintained tip

One of the reasons I bought it now is that I want to get some practice in with it before season starts in a few weeks
