Low deflection shafts and BHE

Been looking at carbon fiber shafts and have a dilemma. I like the convenience of using BHE. Aim swivel shoot. I have a 314 and put a kamui ss on it to allow me to play BHE with it. I have got so used to playing with BHE that low deflection aiming is actually more difficult for me now. Did I move the cue parallel to the aim line?

What do other BHE aficionados think of the CFS? Am I wasting money if I buy one?

What does this mean?

There is very little difference in deflection between a 314 and a carbon fiber shaft, so I don’t think whether or not you use backhand English would be a factor as to whether you’d like a CF shaft.

Some love CF shafts and some don’t. You just need to try out one to find out.

I use backhande English with the Bull Carbon, XLR8, Cynergy and my Schuler CF by Mendoza. The Bull Carbon has almost as much cue ball deflection as my regular solid wood shafts. My Schuler‘s squirt is right in my sweet spot, about a 9“ effective pivot point. The Cynergy has a longer effective pivot point, so I have to do a little more thinking. I cannot use backhand English by itself with my Revos or my Rhinos.

You will readily adapt to the feel of a different cue. Just play closer to center ball for a while. If you commonly play "2 tips" of right then play 1 tip. You will soon be able to do anything with 1 tip you could with 2.

The dirty secret is everyone's "tips" are different. We all see stuff differently.

Keeping yourself tighter to the center will facilitate adapting to any new cue/shaft. If you have a 314 you're already playing with low deflection. You can use BHE with ld, you will just have to calibrate your stroke/tune in to the new shaft.

I remember when I used to talk about BHE 10 or 15 years ago and people on here laughed at me.
I grew up watching a very formidible player use it all the time ,so I thought it was a shot everyone knew.

Learn to pivot in the air, reset your body, then go down with whatever bridge length you want. This seems to be the best way to do bhe with a ld shaft. The other way is the saws bhe/fhe pivot but in my experience it introduces major stroke flaws .

I like all of mine. Helped me get back in line faster when I started playing again. Have gone back to maple recently however, as I couldn't get the juice I was used to w CF. Bcuz of my stroke type. I use a lot of bhe.

BHE = back hand english - used to counteract the affects of deflection imposed on a cueball when hitting it off center.

Can't use bhe when using a low deflection shaft.
Well, no wonder!!🤣
Thanks 4 that!!

I have noticed pulling closer to center w CF.
Was miscuing more than b4 and had to stay off the extreme stuff.

What kind of adjustments did you make initially for the CF shafts compared to your wooden one(s)?
Did the lighter weight of the shaft throw off the balance as well as feel? How about a smaller tip size if it was in fact smaller?
Sound? How about the size of it just below the tip as it goes through a closed bridge? Are they skinnier? Do they get sticky in higher humidity? What are the weight ranges from high to low?

Had to pull my aim in. Not sticky. I use 13mm and not skinny below ferrule. Weight was diff. Took a bit of playing time to get used to, but cue ball goes where you aim it, not having to adjust for swerve took time. Just point and shoot. Lol.

BHE requires that you match your bridge length to the natural pivot point of your shaft. The 314-2 is medium-low deflection, around 12.5” PP. The 314 is slightly shorter.

To use BHE with a lower deflection shaft, ideally you would lengthen your bridge length to match the shaft. My Cynergy 12.5 is 14” PP, which matches my preferred bridge length. The Rhino 12.5 is 15”. The Revo is 18-19” (way too LD for me).

If you use BHE with a bridge length too short for the shaft, a Very Bad Thing happens: the ball starts wide of the mark (more in the direction the shaft’s pointing), and if it swerves at all, it goes even wider of the mark. It’s kind of like hitting a dreaded double-cross in golf.

I find with my Rhino CF shaft I can't use traditional BHE....but I can do a form of FHE....I set up center CB and as I go down into the shot...As I place my bridge hand I shift the front of the shaft to the desired English.
